The "God" reference in the pledge was placed there in the 1950's to "prove" that the United States was as different as possible from the Soviet Union, which was institutionalizes as a non-religious state. However, the Cold War is over, and the "God" reference is still there, which offends some people who do not believe in God.

"Under God" was added to the "official" words of the pledge by an act of Congress in the mid 1950's. It was done as part of the country's response to the USSR and Communism which was portrayed (and actually was) a godless/atheistic threat to the US and western democracy.

You must really have a problem with Jesus Christ since you cannot even include His name in the word Christianity. What are you so scared of? Why does His name anger you so much?

And no, it doesn't "prove" it. For that, you only have to go back and read the biographies of the majority of the founding fathers. (That does NOT mean only read Jefferson's and Franklins since their Christianity was not biblical Christianity.) Read them all. Many of them wrote several volumes and you will see that the majority of them were seminarians and/or preachers. Note that the first Bible to be printed in the US was BY the US Congress itself and for the EXPRESS PURPOSE of using in public schools to teach children more about the truths in which their country was conceived.

Do your homework. The truth is there, but since you are so scared of the name of Jesus Christ, you will probably deny it, even when it slaps you upside the head.

"Under god" was added into the pledge in the 50's. The US was founded on Deism.

Gosh, that must be it... but only if the founding fathers lived in the mid 1950's.

Oh, and for the fellow directly below me: YES, kiddo, it's freedom of AND from religion... but you're taking "FROM religion" in the wrong way.

------------------------

Forcing people to accept some particular idea or adhere to behavioral standards from someone else’s religion means that their religious freedom is being infringed upon.

Freedom from religion does not mean, as some mistakenly seem to claim, being free from seeing religion in society. No one has the right not to see churches, religious expression, and other examples of religious belief in our nation — and those who advocate freedom of religion do not claim otherwise.

What freedom from religion does mean, however, is the freedom from legislating the rules and dogmas of other people’s religious beliefs so that we can be free to follow the demands of our own conscience, whether they take a religious form or not. Thus, we have both freedom of religion and freedom from religion because they are two sides of the same coin.
