Can anyone tell me more technically about the lieder. Are many in a minor key or why are they important in the devt. of W. music?

I knew that lieder were songs. I am surprised but not too much that no one mentioned his symphonies.

I love The Shepherd on the Rock, or Der Hirt Auf Dem Felsen (D. 965) for Soprano, Clarinet and Piano.
Beautiful piece of music.

Schubert wrote numerous lieder, and the more famous ones (and some of my favorites) are his settings of Goethe's texts.

The above poster's favorite "Gretchen on spinning wheel" is one of his most famous and a standard in the soprano repertoire.

Schubert set eighty of Goethe's texts to music in a span of twelve years, some of which were set more than once.

thus we end up with a set of songs which has a permanent foodhold in the world of German lied.

My favorite piece is Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel...I just love it. Which lieder are you speaking of? He has several...lieder is German for song...all of his songs...or solo pieces are lieders.

The first Schubert piece I ever loved was the theme song to the old sitcom "Wings". I didn't know the name of it, and kept buying CDs of Schubert music, hoping one would have it on it.

Okay, I found out that's one of his piano sonatas. Sonata no. 20 in A major-rondo-allegretto. I'd have to say that's my favorite.

There's also a happy little piece that I can't remember the name, but I'll look it up.

Moment musical in F minor. Fun piece of music.
