Do we really have to think about it? I guess that we do. Take a look around...it is a 'me' world. Yes, we should give others what we want to receive but the real thing here is that we don't do it just for the receipt. We should do it because it is the right thing to do: the right way to be. And to go one step further, we should do it even after others have given us less than we would like to receive. Always take the high road, be able to look back without embarrassment and regrets. Laughter can diffuse a whole lot of bad giving and receiving.

I guess I DO see these as two different options of how to move with intention (in contrast to previous post). The first is retaliatory, the second can be seen as manipulative though that isn't necessarily negative. And a third option might be something along the lines of...to give as you know is most loving, without regard for outcome.

The universe is set up like a mirror.
If you give what you get you can only expect more like it in return.
If you give what you want, this is what you will get in return.
If you want love from the universe then be loving. So long as you do this love is all that you will see around you.
Forget to be loving and the universe will respond in kind with whatever you have requested. Its that simple.
Love and blessings

I try to give others what I would like to receive. I try to see myself from their point of view and act accordingly. Not all of the time, but most of the time. It is what my parents taught me a long time ago and it works.

The second one. But you'd never know it, listening to the "devout" on this site.
I guess people misconceived that saying the name of a book (or Messiah) means that they remember what either one said. It's like bar stool philosopher reasoning. Observe a Mina Bird - you'll see what I mean.

You ask the question by asking the same question twice in your question....there is no "or" because you've asked the same question twice in a different way. But, to answer your question.....yes. For example, if one wants love give love. If you want a friend be a friend. If you want respect give respect, and so forth. Yea, it's a good idea.

The second one. Maybe it will make people stop and think about the way they treat others.

It's always better not to return evil for evil, but to do unto others how you would have them do unto you.
