You can but I like to add a little chopped onion, cilantro, and diced bell pepper; let simmer. Very good served over rice or to just eat it from a bowl.

If the liquid in the can of beans is thick and fairly colorless, I like to rinse that liquid off the beans.
When beans are soaked, then cooked in the same water, the starches on the bean hulls tend to cause flatulence.
Washing away these starches, and then cooking the beans in whatever broth or water and seasonings you wish, makes a much better dish.
And thanks for asking the question; I plan to try some of the recipe suggestions, too.

I don't, no way, I make sure to start my "broth" of seasoning (ie Sazon or Curry or Salt and Pepper or Mrs Dash, my favorite is 2 packets of Sazon with Coriandor y annato and also about 1ts of Badia's Complete Seasoning) and bits of diced ham (not cold cut, but baked ham leftover meat) with some cut of fresh garlic cloves, (2 small ones are good) and boil it a for a minute or two.
then I add the beans, with fresh parsley or cilantro (I use culantro but it's not grown in all climates) and bay leaf for flavor but not consumption, and then I add the canned black beans...and simmer for about 45-60 min on lowest heat...stir occasionally and serve with Rice (brown or white or yellow)
Yummy!

The easiest way to have excellent black beans (probably not the best, the other answers look awesome) is to add 1/2 of a can of Mexican Festival Rotel, drained. It's the kind with lime juice and cilantro. Add just a dash of garlic powder and you're good to go. It's so good!

Add a bay leaf when you cook and a little garlic powder. Don't eat the bay leaf.

you can saute onion, garlic, etc, then fry...serve with fresh homemade salsa, twist of lime and dollop of sour cream if desired. heated corn or flour tortillas are great with them, so is chicken.
