"Meditation" to Christians is not the same as meditation to everyone else. Actual meditation is relaxation, breathing control, and an attempt to make contact with oneness of the universe. This meditation has wonderful qualities. It reduces stress, gives one more energy, helps people to feel more at peace with themselves and others, and even regulates metabolism and health!
The Christian idea of "meditation" is merely to pray or to read the bible (or to sit there thinking about the verse you just read). It is NOT the same! It doesn't have the same physical benefits. Of course, the Christian church does not allow for the practice of TRUE meditation. It's too "mystical" or bordering on "paganism". Ask your pastor, you'll find this to be true.
So the question is "why"? Is the church afraid that you may "transcend" their petty beliefs? Are they afriad that your relationship with God (or whoever) may become "better" than theirs? Something to think about. I wouldn't go around telling you Christian friends that you meditate though.
Blessings

Catholics have been meditating for almost 2,000 years.
Mediation as prayer is encouraged by the Catholic Church.
For Catholics meditation is a quest to understand the why and how of the Christian life, in order to adhere and respond to what the Lord is asking.
One way this is done is by reading scripture, asking God to give you understanding of it, and then pondering it in your heart.
Here is the Pope promoting meditation on the Scriptures: http://www.catholic.net/global_catholic_news/template_news.phtml?news_id=76678&channel_id=2
With love in Christ.

i meditate a lot and it is suprememly helpful. Jacob in scripture meditated out in the field. The bible says to meditate on the word of God. Meditation is good it just depends what your meditating on. Philippians says whatever things are good, lovely, pure, meditate on these things. Who is all these things? Well, Jesus is so meditate on Jesus as revealed through His bible and pray for unveiling revelation which only God can give you by His Holy Spirit in power. It seems that what we feed on we become. Their is the flesh "our sinful nature" and the Spirit of God who lives in true Christians. These two war against each other. It is written "if you sow to the flesh you will reap corruption, if you sow to the Spirit you will reap life everlasting". So meditate on the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, not the fake picture but who He is in scripture. Jesus is the door, bread of life, way the truth and the life and no man comes to the Father but by Him, the radiance of the glory of God, beloved, always does what pleases the Father, is risen in power. Though He was rich in heaven He became poor as a man and took the guilt of our sin then rose in power from the dead ascended into heaven and interecedes for us at the right hand of the Father and will return to set up His unending invincible kingdom. Read revelation chapter 2 and see how great He is as John falls as dead before Him.

I do, but I just call it praying. When I pray the rosary, I can pretty much get lost in the mysteries. It is interesting how you can meditate on the same set of mysteries many, many times, and still so many times draw new meaning from them. I think I tend to pray the Luminous and the Sorrowful mysteries the most often:
+The Luminous Mysteries+
THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
THE WEDDING OF CANA
THE PROCLAMATION OF THE KINGDOM
THE TRANSFIGURATION
THE INSTITUTION OF THE EUCHARIST
+The Sorrowful Mysteries+
THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN
THE SCOURGING AT THE PILLAR
THE CROWNING WITH THORNS
THE CARRYING OF THE CROSS
THE CRUCIFIXION

i do meditate at times, but i mostly pray to calm myself down, or i just talk to myself.
i know it sounds weird, but i just sit down in my room, or another quiet place and just talk out the situation.
