And why did God set out certain specific commandments yet you have to read into whether other things are 'sins"?

Like rape and child molestation, believing in evolution, invitro fertilization, abortion......
I won't go on to avoid confusion.

Ok, keeping it simple, what is so special about "commandments" which set them apart?

This question has been going on for centuries. A commandment is a law that God gave for us to follow. Breaking the law is a sin. However, churches tend to mess up the definition of sin. According to the Bible a sin is ONLY doing something that God says is wrong to do. The way churches confuse you is because the church wants you to stay far away from sin. So they sometimes put their spin on what is a sin and not. For instance, some churches say that drinking alcohol is a sin while other churches believe that you can drink alcohol and still make it into heaven. If it was a sin, and you drank alcohol and never repented, you wouldn't make it into heaven. The bible doesn't say drinking alcohol is a sin. Matter of fact, Jesus's first miracle was turning water into wine.
As for rape, and child molestation, the bible says they are sins. In the case of invitro, it isn't addressed in the bible, so it can't be a sin.
If your church says invitro is a sin, then they need to prove it. If the Bible says "Sin" is breaking the law of God, and invetro isn't listed as a sin, then the church is saying they know more than God, and are assuming it's a sin. It gets deep. But be secure in knowing that God loves you. Obey HIS law and not what the church says, and you will be rewarded in Heaven. Be Polite, Good Luck

The problem you have is that no person can answer your question honestly. The only honest answers you receive should contain the phrase "I believe that" and should end with "But no one knows". If you are Christian as I am, then you know of the Ten Commandments. And you know that they are written rules from God telling us what is right and what is wrong. The problem with the Commandments it that God does not give written definitions of what the words of the Commandments mean. We cannot know what "love", "kill" or "adultry" means to God. We can read in the Bible many stories where people God held up as example showed differing benchmarks of the meaning of these words.
Therefore we must make up our own minds as to the meaning of these words. And that is why we must say "I believe" when speaking of the commandments. They are not the same for every person at every period of time. What is a sin today may or may not have been a sin in Christ's time. And God gave us no meaning of the words that he chose to use in the Commandments for a very good reason. I believe that he wanted to make the Bible a tool that reaches all people regardless of their beliefs. And those that are drawn to the Bible will be drawn to God where he can speak to them as only a God can do.

The Commandments were written on Tablets of Stone. These are the Laws from God. A Commandment tells us not to do these terrible sins. Sin is when we disobey the 10 commandments. You are not doing what God has told us to do.
Different as day and night. Take care and may God bless you, Always !

A commandment is a law or rule that God set out to give us guidelines about what is right or wrong. A sin results when we do not follow those guidelines.

Certain commandments were set out because if you follow those commandments, you will not sin. But, yes, you have to interpret decisions based on those few commandments. All of what is right and wrong is able to be determined from God's commandments. And to make things even more broad, Jesus summed up all the commandments with just two: Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. If you apply those two to everything you do, you can follow all of God's commandments.

A commandment is a norm of moral and/or religious action; above all, the Ten Commandments given by God to Moses. Jesus summarized all the commandments in the twofold command of love of God and love of neighbor.

Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.

God gave us wonderful minds to reason through modern situations as good or bad. With prayer and an open mind, the Holy Spirit also guides our decisions.

With love in Christ.

commandments are the law as given to moses, by God.

the sin is when i call you a dumb@SS for not knowing the difference.

believing in evolution is not a sin. that may in fact be how we were created. nobody says (as far as i know) that invitro is a sin, it is the abortion thing that takes a life, that we christians, muslims and jews believe to be wrong.

uh, if a definite set of rules are given to you by someone who does not age, always was, always will be and can give you admittance into an eternal paradise, it's probably a more significant rule than "eat all the peas, or no desert for you!"

The Commandments were standards in which to live our life in Christ.

Sin is the rejection of God. A turning away from goodness.

Jesus condensed the 10 Commandments to 2.
Love God and love your neighbor.

If you evaluate your actions, ask yourself these 2 things. Did my action foster Love of God and Love of my neighbor.

If not, then all those sins you mentioned probably are in place.
Self examination of our actions keep us humble and grounded in truth.

because every sin falls under one of the 10 commandments, a commandment is a rule or law. if you disobey a law or break a rule, then you have commited a sin. anything you do that is agaisnt God's word is a sin. which ever sin you have done, you have broken one of the 10 commantments.

YOU HAVE 10 COMMANDMENTS, THE ONLY 10 RULES THAT IF YOU RESPECT & DO, YOU WILL DO THE RIGHT THING. A SIN IS BREAKING ONE OF THESE COMMANDMENTS. LIKE, NOT COMMITING ADULTERY, BREAKING THIS WOULD BE HAVING SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE. BUT GOD ALSO SAYS, IF YOU ASK ME FOR FORGIVNESS & BELIEVE IN ME, HE WILL FORGIVE.
