differently FROM EACH OTHER! You people dodn't even understand a simple question! Shouldn't someone who's been paying taxes haev more of a chance to become legal?

Betty, WE ARE NOT GIVEN ANY LEGAL CHANCE TO BECOME LEGAL.
Once your visas expires you cannot anything to adjust your status. And...I love my country but I have a job here and other things that keep me here.
What many of you don't understand is that those who did it legally won a Green Card Lottery. They were given a chance not because they are in any way better. They never did anything for this country, most of them speak no English and your govmt spends millions on educationg them! I come educated and just because my visa expired I have no chance? How much lower can this country fall?

immigrants should have all the rights and privileges, as citizens of the country . this is what they dont teach you in school illegals are not here by law , they are not here by visa and they do not pay taxes there are no numbers to tax them .Every citizen has to obey the laws or they have repercussions so illegals already breaking the laws shouldn't have rights that immigrants and citizens have . you might as well say murder is OK because if they don't follow laws why should anyone else have to .Immagrants should be treated like citizens, illeagals need to be treated like law breakers

Theoretically, sure they should. Legal immigrants are certainly treated differently due to classification, since those who would best benefit the interests of the country are those who are educated. Also, paying taxes at least means they were somewhat law abiding and trying to pay their way.

I suspect that the main reason for the 5 year/2 year breakdown in the Senate bill is because the number of those illegally here is so huge, and they were trying to whittle it down. They could certainly do that by applying typical entry standards such as skills, education and tax paying, instead. Frankly, we would be better off.

Or, if the idea that someone who has been here 20 years however unskilled and uneducated is too compelling, they could combine it. Something like - more than 15 years with unassailable evidence (school transcripts, tax returns, etc.), or else a lesser period but with college degree or better, employed, and tax paying.

One of the guys running for President in 2008 was saying we should base cuts on skill, actually, and reduce unskilled immigration, which isn't far from what you seem to be suggesting.

No, they should have to pay for medical care like the rest of us.. they should have to pay taxes.. they should not be on welfare on hard working americans dollars... I think they should have a time limit like 6 months to have a job so they can pay for their life here. or get out.. just like us. I was a single mom and went through a hard time about 8 years ago.. and I had a hard time getting assistance for a few months.. I get angry that people can come from other countries and make out better than I do, and I am finally not struggling.. making ends meet, and it took me a long time with no assistance.. illegal immigrants should have to do the same.

All immigrants should have to do the same thing. When my family came to America, we HAD to do it LEGALLY!!! We were processed through Ellis Island and sent out across the country to find work. We were not coddled by the government, given any sort of welfare, and we ABSOLUTELY had to learn ENGLISH. We weren't given any breaks, we had to work hard for everything we have. Therefore, I think, we appreciate it more. ILLEGAL immigration is a slap in the face of people who had to wait their turn to come to this land of opportunity. The fact that they "can't afford" to come here legally is no concern of mine, nor should it be the concern of every tax paying american citizen. If they don't like the way their country is, and they can't afford to come here, GUESS WHAT??? fix their own country. Start a revolution, overturn leaders that don't care about them. It's just not fair that us (american citizens) have to pay to take care of others. Especially because they don't seem to appreciate it, they seem to feel entitled to it.

they shouldn't be treated differently, but they shouldn't be here.

I'm sorry, i know you have a job and a family and you pay taxes and everything, but the truth is, it's illegal. And I know "you can't get here legally", but then don't get here. Crminals can't say "But my conditions were really bad so I robbed that bank because there wasn't any legal way to get money." So illegal immigrants can't say that either. I'll have no problem if a law is passed that makes it easier for immigrants to get here, but while it's illegal, it's illegal. That's it.

Honestly they should be treated by the letter of the current laws. At least until someone comes up with a viable solution. That would only be fair. Nothing more of nothing less. If one lives in a country, then one should live by it's laws. I mean any country not just the U.S. No one should be above the law. It is not fair to other citizens of that country.

Daaaaaaaaam! what a stupid question, how else are they to be treated they are illegal whether they come on a visa or cross the border, they were not invited to stay, they did not notify immigration they just came, criminals are treated different in every country, even college educated criminals.

Yes, from the standpoint that they should not be allowed to get jobs or work in any way, should not be entitled to any benefits, and should be deported as soon as anyone knows they are illegal. This give them a break stuff is so ignorant its amazing- look at the true effects of the problem before you say something so silly.

No if they are illegal they are here illegally bottom line. You cant come in the back door and expect front door service
If they are such good upstanding people why haven't they applied for legal status? Identify, locate and deport all illegal immigrants.

No they should not be treated differently. It is inhumane to hurt those people. I disagree with the fact that they are here illegally, but I am more frustrated with the lazy Americans that continue to abuse the welfare system. A HUGE example is 99% of the residence in the 9th ward of New Orleans. Why do the woman continue to have unprotected sex, get knocked up and continue to splunk out baby after baby??Most of the woman cannot even support themselves. Alot of them cannot read and choose not to learn. They point their finger out someone else for their poverty stricken matter. It is NEVER their fault. Never! The same government they b*tch about neglecting them is the same government they continue to rape. Is this just Karma?? That is a never ending, non-evolving culture. That is a much bigger issue than the immigrant thing.
