Broiler or frying/grill pan. I don't own a real outdoor grill.

Great question - and I believe than 'on the grill' is going to be the popular answer. I have no problem agreeing with that answer. However, I will offer an alternative for when a grill is not available.

I like to marinate my steaks (KC Strip or Rib-eye) in olive oil and a decent rub (MarGarlica Madness is very good), then pan sear them (a hot cast iron skillet with a little canola oil works good), then pop them in a 350 F oven until done to taste - 145 F for med rare - 155 for med, etc. Let them rest a few mins (to distribute the juices) before cutting. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm... They don't even need steak sauce.

Don't know what equipment you do have but here is an idea. Take a cookie sheet, place a wire cookie rack on top. Season your steaks with garlic salt and pepper and place on rack, on top of cookie sheet. Place your oven rack in the second from top slot. Turn on oven broiler, keep oven door propped open a bit, and broil the steak on each side about 8 min. Keep an eye on the steaks or they will burn. You can get these items at the grocery store for about $3 if you don't have them.

The grill is the best place for a steak.

I cover mine in olive oil and usually greek seasoning, the slap in on the hottest searing burner on my grill long enough to sear it on both sides (@ 3-4 minutes per side). Then I let it cook an additiona 4 minutes per side minutes, flipping pretty regularly, and let it sit for about 15 before cutting it. This would be for a 1 to 1/1/2" steak. Much quicker for a thin cut.

The best way to cook steak is on a grill only because the fat can drip off of the meat. But you can cook it anyway that you like.

I prefer it on the grill, but I also like it in a stir fry from the frying pan.
