If your vehicle is an automatic always shift into overdrive. Your transmission will shift through all the gears until it hits overdrive. If your car is a stick use overdrive when you are cruising in your highest gear and have no intentions of slowing down, such as when you are on the freeway.

on the freeway
Generally speaking, overdrive (OD) is the highest gear in the transmission. Most automatic transmissions have 3 speeds and overdrive (fourth speed). Overdrive allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm for a given road speed. This allows the vehicle to realize better fuel efficiency, and often quieter operation on the highway. When you switch it on, you allow the transmission to shift into overdrive mode after the certain speed is reached (usually 30 - 40 mph depending on the load). When it is off, the transmission shifting is limited to the lower gears. For normal driving conditions, operation of the overdrive should be enabled.

Overdrive is a gear where the engine is turning at the same speed as the engine. thus getting better fuel economy plus less wear on the engine since it spins slower. great for gas mileage 4 wheel drive consumes more gas because you are driving 2 extra wheels..namely the front ones.so stay in 2 wheel drive for most of the time except on slippery surfaces.

Of course you should use over drive above 40 mph on hard surfaces. All wheels engaged you want power and turn the over drive off. In a three speed automatic transmission turning the OD off the transmission stays in second or four speeds the transmission stays in third. If you are driving faster than you can run when driving off road you are not taking in the sights. Slow and easy off roading doesn't tear up the trails and your truck.

if its a truck, use overdrive when you're pulling something particularly heavier than usual. If its a car, then thats the last gear it switches into when your driving on the interstate.

when your offroading with an automatic trans you do not want to run in overdrive.Overdrive causes your trans to shift uneededly causing higher temps and risking trans damage.reserve overdrive for road and hwy use.

I'm not an expert and the person I got this from isn't exactly one either, but I believe it should be used on highways (high rate of speed) and if you should get stuck while off road to increase power to the wheels and knock you loose (hopefully). Makes sense to me, but I can't guarantee that is correct.
