I am not talking about in the movies. What are the responsibilities of a godfather. My wife and I were thinking of asking a friend to be the godfather of our child and I am just wondering what all we are getting ourselves into.

A quick search produced the following:

Christian Responsibilities of a Godparent

1. Pray for your godchild regularly
2. Set an example of Christian living
3. Help him/her to grow in the faith of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in which he was baptized
4. Give every encouragement to follow Christ and fight against evil
5. Help your godchild to look forward to confirmation.

Whoever you choose, I hope your child truly benefits.

Best of luck.

P.S. The information given about the godparent/s looking after the children should you die, has no legal standing within the UK.

I've been a godfather for 16 years and haven't been called on to do anything except take first communion. The purpose of a godfather-as explained by the minister- is to make sure your godchild has religious instruction. Oh, yeah. I had to be there for baptizing too.

as my username states, iam the godfather of 5 kids. alot of times a friend or relative will be named godfather by parents and it just means that that person would take over should anything happen to the parents. it is extreamly important to know this person very well. observe how your child or children react to this person. your kids are often times your best judge of character. discuss with your wife what EXACTLY the roll of this person will be and make no decision until you both agree. i got very lucky. i work for the guy who made me godfather. it took six years for him to come to that decision. before that i was a family friend. now i will get custody if anything ever happens to both of them. i have taken on the roll of a third parent. and my life has never been better. its all fine and good for someone to agree to be godfather, just make sure they know its not some game, kids get hurt easily, especially when they are attatched to someone who isnt completely seriouse. there are no set godfather rules, it can be as a glorified babysitter or like me an intricate part of thier lives, its up to you. sorry for such a long explanation, i just happen to take being a godfather very seriously. good luck..hope this helps

People should choose Godparents to make sure that in the event of their (the parents) demise, their wishes as far as religion for their children are carried out. (e.g. You're Catholic and you want your children to be raised Catholic. You would choose Godparents to see that the child studied his or her catechism, received their first communion, was confirmed, etc.)

It's sad, but nowadays most people pick "Godparents" because it's become a trend. They usually choose their best friends to "honor" them, having no idea what the traditional role of Godparents is.

EDIT: I just read some of the other responses, and Godparents are NOT guardians. (Unless, of course, you choose your baby's Godparents to be the guardians if you die.) A legal guardian is something *totally* different and unrelated.

Godparents do not traditionally take kids if the parents die as some people are suggesting. In fact, the churches often discourage this. The godparent's role is to inform the child of the religion, and to help them to navigate moral issues. This is usually best accomplished by a non-guardian,... you are like the child's moral sounding board.

The godparents can step in and take & raise the child if anything ever happens to the parents. They also provide the same love & care as regular grandparents and sometimes financial assistance for college if they choose to. They're the same as grandparents. It's an honor for them.'
