there is a differance between discipline and abuse. A tap on the nose, not too light, but a descent tap, will cause the dog surprise which will distract him from thinking you are playing. The reason why the nose is used is because there is a layer of just skin streatched tightly over bone. So a simple tap will cause a little sting for surprise without any physical violence or be an obvious violent movement. Now, when he pees inside, you can only punish if you catch him in the act. While training if you find it way after the fact, it's only gonna confuse him because you have to teach him it's bad first. Now that you've caught him in the act, hold him by his tuft, and push his nose to the stain so he can smell the spot and see the spot. Tap him on the nose and firmly tell him he is "bad", which you do and that is the correct thing to do. NEVER tell a dog "no" for punishment because "no" is a traning technique, command and training correction and you don't want him to associate "no" negatively, or else further training will be more difficult and less effective. Pet stores sell a "cage" per say that is "round" and somewhat small. When you are done sopping up the pee, don't disinfect yet, put the dog next to the "crime scene" and the cage around him and leave him in it for 10 to 15 minutes. You want him to whine. This way he is miserable in his yuckieness and you teach him that he does not get out until he stops whining, so don't let him out until he stops whining after the 10 or 15 minutes. Then use Petzyme to disinfect the pee pee area. To thouroughly potty train, you need to establish an association of outside good inside bad. Take him out every 2 hours, if he is not crated, 10 to 15 minutes after eat/drink, play/sleep. First thing in the morning, imediately after letting him out of his crate(if of course it's been a while), right before you put him in the crate and you're gonna be gone for a while and directly before you go to bed. You want as much positive association over negative as possible. The more positive, the more a dog is willing to repeat good behavior, if all the dog hears is no no no no no, then he'll do it in secrecy. NEVER treat for potty, potty is a necessity not a command or trick, so just praise him a lot. To associate the crate as positive as possible, put him in, tell him "crate up", close and lock the crate, THEN give him a treat and praise him. This way he's performing then being rewarded for good behavior. NEVER "coax" or "persuade" a dog into a crate by throwing a treat in and letting him follow it in. Remember training is about what you want, not what he wants. If you have any other questions or need more help just contact me by clicking on my name then clicking on contact. GOOD LUCK, BE PATIENT, CONSISTENT, and most of all HAVE FUN!!! Training is a great way to build a good master and dog relationship and is great bonding time. He's doing a good job, thus having fun, and you're feeling good because you are getting results, oh and don't forget, training takes time, at first it'll seem like you're getting no where, but just waite and it'll start happening.

You say NO! or ACK! loudly and immediately take him outside.
The more important thing to teach your dog is that going outside is a good thing. Go outside with him and when he goes to the bathroom, praise him and/or give him a treat. Make a big deal about it.
Another method you can try is called the umbilical method. If he keeps going inside where he shouldn't get a leash that you can attach around your waist. Make him follow you around. Dogs wont go in a confined area even if it's a leashed area. Once he's been good you can let him off of the leash for a while. If he goes in a spot, take him outside. Clean it up. Bring him back inside and tether him to something in that area and leave him there with toy or treat. This will teach him that isn't a spot to go to the bathroom. This worked well with both my dogs.

My husband and I don't hit our dogs either. We have a new puppy and are working on potty training her.
Puppies have a hard time controlling their bladder so you should let the puppy out at least once an hour. When she goes potty outside, make sure you give her lots of praise, pets, and even treats. This will teach her that going outside is the right thing to do. If she potties on the floor and you don't catch her, there isnt much you can do. Punishment won't work because they live in the here and now and won't understand why they are in trouble. Instead, you should clean the mess up when they aren't looking. The way to stop them from going in the house is to catch them in the act. If you catch them, startle them by saying No! loudly. THis should get her/him to stop for the moment, Then immediately take them outside to finish going. Praise them when they do it outside.
I hung a bell from our doorknob. We've trained our dogs to ring the bell when they need to go out. We started by first getting the dogs to touch the bell with their nose, treating them, then letting them out. Then, we waited to treat them until they actually rang the bell. Little steps.

My dachshund is 2 1/2 years old and I actually trained him inside the house on pee wee pads first. After about a month I started taking him out to use the bathroom. When he used to go inside I yell bad in a different voice. Sometimes rub his nose in it or close to it. But he really doesn't like that. He does get it... It seems harsh, but it works. Use a different tone of voice and when he goes outside remind him that it's good!

Please get a dog training video...all this is in the video, along with how to quickly train to leash, commands, tricks, all there....this is a pack animal and needs to be treated as such. Dogs are smart, learn quickly. Note where he pees and block off the area. Usually it is farthest from their living space. Quickly restirct this space and leave a door open. Catch him a few times peeing, yell NO and quickly put him outside...Praise him when he finishes outside and everytime he pees outside...he will get the message very quickly. Good luck

I found that the best thing to do was to put a leash on him & take him outside while saying "No (name).Bad dog" Leave him outside while you clean up then let him back in.If you see himm sniffing around grab him straight away & put him outside. Its best to use a leash first cos he won't want to go out for you. This can take about 2-3 weeks if done properly. Then he will start to go to the door himself to let you know.Your right to never hit him because it just makes dogs more viscous.Good luck!!

show him his 'mess' and say no as sternly as you can, then take him outside. if you can catch him in the act, rush him outside so he can finish and when/if he goes outside, praise him. pet him, play with him, give him affection and use a 'happy' voice. dogs can sense when you're happy, and he'll associate you showing him affection when he goes outside, and you being upset or ignoring him when he goes inside. and eventually, he won't want to go in the house, because he won't want to mess up his territory. dogs can be surprisingly picky about their 'area' being clean. my 2 1/2 year old would make herself sick, before she ever went in the house. she knows it's wrong now, and has learned how to get my attention when she needs to go.

My pit only messes inside when its cold out. He knows he's done wrong the minute we spot the pile. I never yell at him but I let him know that he should go out by putting him out as soon as he's busted. Also I let him out as soon as he is done eating and he does his business. This is very effective. I figure it will take some patients on my part. IGood luck!
