I would recommend a female, since you'll likely have fewer problems later on when the pup reaches maturity. If well trained and brought up well, and if neither is a dog-aggressive breed, the pup should have few problems with the adult regardless of the sex. Bringing in a pup over 3 months, though could cause some aggression problems. Usually a well mannered adult will tolerate the shenanigans of a puppy up until about that age, then they get tired of it and start teaching it manners.

Regardless of whether you choose a male or female puppy, you should introduce the puppy to the older dog on neutral territory, such as a park. Don't introduce the puppy to the older dog at the older dog's home.

Why is he anxious??? Is he alone too much??? Is it the nature
of his breed to be high strung??? The sex of the other dog is NOT
as important as the general temperment and personality of the
animal...At one point I had 4 ADULT INTACT MALES living in
my house together...they never had any disagreements because
THEY understood it was MY house and I was the PACK leader..
Males will most generally only fight to solve the problem but the
females will fight to death.

If you get a male puppy your older male dog will probably jealous and kill it but if you have a female dog your older dog will not act as ruff.

Females are less agressive. Be sure to get her spayed. And introduce your two dogs slowly. Your older dog has been king of the hill for a long time.'

Two male dogs are more likely to fight. I'd go with the female.

I am going to suggest that you NOT get a new dog at this time...your old guy is winding down, and a new dog may ruin his life..what is left of it. Please do not do that to him ... he will be insecure and worried in his last days. Please wait until he is gone before getting a puppy. There is no way he can adapt to the energy of a puppy. Good luck

I dont think it matters. It depends on the breed, and temperment of the dogs. If yours is small, and you get a bigger one, it might not like it...or vice versa.
