Usually, dogs and cats adapt to new ownership easily, but there are a few that do not..they spend their remaining days mourning the loss of their "alpha" leader. There was a case in England where a Scottie spent its remaining life at the grave of its dead master...would not leave the grave...there is a statue of the dog at the owners grave to this day. But this is very rare. Usually, dogs "love" their owners, but upon death, the dogs take on sniff, and go on their way. It isn't for lack of loyalty, it is just that they are pack animals and do not waste life over a dead "leader." They adapt to the new leader....just their way. But, I will tell you that I gave a lovely dog of mine to a dear friend because they needed a good dog in their life, and to this day, when I visit, that dog does not leave my side. and the dog has a great life with the new owner...but she certainly remembers me.

It is said that dogs have the mental capsity of a 4 year old. Maybe threating the dogs loss as you would treat the loss of a parent in a small child would work for your dog.

Do Dogs Grieve Their Owner's Passing? ...

Perhaps, the most famous dog-grieving story of all time is that of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye terrier owned by a Mr. John Gray of Edinburgh, Scotland. Mr. Gray passed away in 1858 and was buried in Greyfriars Churchyard, Bobby was one of the conspicuous mourners. As time went by he never forgot his deceased master. Every day for the next 14 years until his own death in 1872, Bobby spent each night lying on his master’s grave come rain, hail and snow. In honor of Bobby’s devotion, a statue and water fountain was erected to his memory in 1873.
