To start, it sounds like you need to clean the skillet...I'm a big fan of using kosher salt to act as an abrasive, heat the skillet and salt over a fairly high heat. Next using an old kitchen towel that you probably will have to throw out, wipe down the inside vigorously. **** This goes without saying: Turn off your heat source and BE CAREFUL when you do this. Next allow the salt to cool in the skillet and discard when it is cool enough to do so... or you can save for future use, try not to use more than 5x's Now is when you can add your oil..... I would simply spray Pam on the outside and inside of your skillet and then store in the oven. If you don't use it that often, a drawback of lard is that it can become rancid as it is an animal fat. Hope this helps and NEVER EVER use soap on cast iron.

Is it rusty? Then take a scouring thing like Choreboy or a wire brush & get the rust off. Then, wash it, wipe it with oil (I use cooking oil, car oil not good, lol), put some more oil on it and put it in the oven when you are baking something! Iron Skillet-My Weapon Of Choice. If ya do da Iron Skillet right, it becomes non-stick.

ABSOLUTELY..., clean it thoroughly..do not use any detergent soap.., simply scrub with one of those green scrub pads.
Rinse and dry it
Take some olive oil, or peanut will work as well, and coat it inside and out liberally
Place skillet in a pre-heated oven @ approx. 350 degrees for maybe 30 Min's,
every 30 Min's. take it out and re-apply another coat
after the third time , while applying another coat, rub in some coarse salt to the inside bottom
You will have a beautiful pan.., do remember to also do the outside each time as this allows it to become "non-stick"

First put lard or cooking oil and them cover with coarse salt and then bake it off for 20/30 minutes. After it cools down enough to the touch clean it with a dry cloth and some more lard/oil and bake it off for 20/30 minutes. After that clean it well with a cloth/towel with some oil and stored it in your oven. Always remember NEVER to wash your iron skillet just clean it well with dry paper towel and then put some lard and store it on your oven...

Clean real good, dry out. Coat the inside of the pan with olive oil and put over high heat for 30 minutes in a well ventilated kitchen. Repeat about 3 times and wipe excess oil out after each coat.

Pour Coca Cola in the pan and let sit to eat off the rust.
Pour out the Coke and wipe dry with paper towel.
Then put vegetable oil on the pan and bake at 250 degrees for 2 hours.
Repeat oil and baking for a good coating of oil on the pan.
I clean with water on the stove top and wipe dry then spray with vegetable oil and store.
Put paper towel on pan to protect from any other pans stored on top of the pan.

# Wash skillet in hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
# Apply a thin coating of melted shortening (Crisco, for example) or vegetable oil with a solf cloth or paper towel.
# Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place skillet UPSIDE DOWN on top oven rack.
# Place foil on a cookie sheet and place on bottom rack of oven. This will catch the drippings from the skillet.
# Bake in oven for one hour.
# Turn oven off. DO NOT OPEN. Allow skillet to cool down in oven (several hours). There may be a film on your cookware, this comes off after use. You will have to use it a couple times as a test.
