You would have to check with the local laws in your area, certainly sounds unfair to me. If I were him I would opt for a satellite dish.

Back when I worked for the phone company, they used to deny service to certain address if they suspected the same person (with a delinquent account) lived there, and someone was trying to establish service again.
But this was a company regulated by the state, and the law backed them up doing it.
Direct TV isn't a government regulated utility. I can't see how they can force him to pay that old bill. But I would not be surprised if they terminated his current service.

Just because he's in the same house doesn't mean anything. The ONLY way they can forcible collect money from your son is if they take him to court. If and only if there is a court judgment can they do things like forcible levy a bank account. They are just trying to scare him because they think they might get him to pay up. I've dealt with collections agencies for clients in the past and its a regular practice in the business. Your son should tell them to go screw themselves and take him to court if they think they have a case. If they still antagonize him, have him talk to your state's consumer protection agency. It establishes a record of harassment and if he wishes to taken them to court one day he'll have evidence to use.

He does not have to pay so long as his name was never associated with your account. If they call your son demanding payment, he can explain that you are two different people, that there is no community property laws between parents and their children, and if they still want to insist that he will see them in court. By law they have to stop bothering you once you tell them to quit calling.

just pay your bill! It is ruining your credit and it can do the same for your son's credit. You should contact the company and tell them why you don't think you should pay. Just ignoring them is not going to make them go away. Eventually they will send creditors after you and you wages can be garnished. So deal with it now before it gets worse!

That doesn't make sense to me. It wasn't in his name so it shouldn't become his problem. Don't just take my word for it though. You may want to consult with a lawyer about this because laws vary from state to state and I'm not a lawyer. :-)

They can try, but can not legally hold your son responsible for your bill.
