Ok. I just moved into my college dorm. I've met a zillion new people, but we don't have real friendships yet, and I just feel lonely and lost. I've never been homesick before, but now I am. i'm not sure how to deal with it.

I was once homesick too. For more than 20 years, I was never away from home. Then after college, I have no choice but leave our home for a review in order to take the board exam.

I was away in another city and pressured/stressed for the board exam. Very homesick in Cebu City, I started comparing my life when I was at home in Cagayan de Oro City. It was very difficult for me then, my first time to be away from home.

Anyway I passed the board exam and manage being homesick:
1. Used my spare time for studying.
2. When to church when ever I can, for guidance/enlightenment.
3. Clean my room/wash clothes/etc whenever I start getting homesick again.
4. Give time for my self to relax to get rid of fatigue/stress-going to the malls/parks/watching movies/surfing the Internet for my studies too.
5. Laugh and chat to erase wrinkles, hehehe!
6. Try calling at home or writing then thru snail mails/emails.
7. Make friends and always give your smile to everyone!!!

You know what I succeed! ;-)

Maybe you could call home a little more often. Nothing is worse than being homesick. Try and make friends with the people that you have met there are the new college and you will forget all about being homesick because you will be so wrapped up in you new friends that you will for get that you are homesick. Give it a try at least it can't hurt.

I'm not sure you can stop - you just have to give it time. Eventually, the place where you are now will become familiar and comfortable, just like your home is. I felt the same way when I first moved into a dorm. I think the thing that helped me best was to stay busy - this should be easy as there are probably orientation activites and parties, etc. Or, if you need to talk with someone in person, maybe you could speak with your dorm supervisor or something. Remember, tons of people feel exactly like you do, even if they aren't showing it. The worst thing you could do is give up and go home. I have a friend who actually did that, after about a week at school, and he has regretted it ever since.

It might be low blood sugar, due to your relaxing after bustling around.

Check out www.hufa.org - the symptoms link, and see if you have any other symptoms too.

Gather up another homesick person or two and sing about home - whatever your state song is. Sing for about 30 minutes. You will all feel better.

The loneliest I have ever been in my life was standing in Piccadilly Circus in London, and didn't know any of the thousands who passed me. I live in Australia, 21 hours away by air. I talked to a person at the hotel I was staying at and she listened, then said "Your loved ones are missing you too!" It is perfectly normal to feel as you do and as you work into the swing of College life and get to know people, it will ease and life will be better again. The clue is in what you wrote. You haven't made any real friends yet. Once you do, you'll be fine. One good friend will make all the difference.

You just moved in into a new environment...give it time. You are just starting and soon you new life will be busy and with new friends or classmates, dorm-mates, etc. You have a phone, the Internet, etc. to stay in touch with the important people in your life. Your recent move is part of growing up and you should take it one day at a time. Enjoy your new experiences!
