when it is brand new, you have to unscrew a little harder than normal, because it could be stuck because of temperature changes during shipping.

and before its first use, you have to softly bite the mouthpiece because it is also closed.

I fill mine with veggie/tomato juice with some lime juice + Tabasco sauce + Worcestershire sauce + vodka.
Unfortunately I do keep falling off my mountain bike.

Seriously mine has a large screw off top...sometimes it is very difficult to unscrew it - maybe due to the vacuum created after drinking from it. I don't know of any special locking mechanism.

There's a large knob on the reservoir pack to unscrew. Just add water and screw the lid back on.

Add Ice & water, seal.

I always tip mine upside down & squeeze it while sucking on the hose to get all the air out. Then you don't hear sloshing ice cubes as you ride.
