What you have mentioned, that you don't want to do, works wonders for me. Do you like to swim? Water aerobics are wonderful for back pain. Good Luck!

First you have to rule out any red flags dude.
If you are experiencing bowel or bladder problems (ie: incontinence) or any numbness particularly in the saddle area, see a doctor.
If you think it's just muscle strain then some anti-inflammatory meds should take the edge off the discomfort.
Most importantly is if it is just muscle strain is to keep mobile with some gentle stretching. Muscle strain could take a couple of weeks to resolve.

For my mom's lower back pain she does physical therapy. Or you could try Yoga, massage therapy, or plain just see a doctor.

I'm assuming you have seen your doctor to rule out any serious problems. I know you said "besides pills" but have you tried Doan's pills? Somehow they work on just back pain and everyone I know who has back pain uses them for relief.
