coriander grows on a bush and if you cut of a little piece of the bush you have a coriander sprig this is also known as cilantro wich is often mistaken for parsley and sold at most grocery stores.
however do not use parsley when a recipe asks for coriander or vice versa

Coriander Sprigs

Yeah. The coriander plant is the same thing as what's called cilantro in U.S. grocery stores. It's a fresh herb that looks a lot like parsley but tastes totally different. It's used a lot in Thai and Indian and Mexican cooking. It'll be over by the parsley in the produce section. (Coriander seeds, a spice, canNOT be substituted for "coriander sprigs" aka cilantro).

Coriander leaves (as I know it) are used to cook, adding a distinctive flavour which you will either love or hate. Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriander for lots of information about it. I guess you can also use the sprigs... You can find coriander at the spices section in any super market.

Cilantro is also called coriander, Chinese parsley, and cuzbara.

This is a spice I really like. It has a sharp, crispy smell and a distinctive taste. Technically, cilantro comes from the green leaves and stems of the coriander plant.

yes you can i would why not just buy a couple of them in the bag from asda and mix it you will get a lot of flavour's coming through with your carrot and what ever else you are putting into the soup.but dried is just as good to me it as to be one or the other.but if you feel the need to curb your curiosity do what ive suggested least you will now one way or the other!!! as you will be wondering if only lol. you like me i have loads of dried herbs in my cupoard you will still get a good flavour from the dried herb and not use as much i have nearly every dried herb under the sun infact i have only used a fresh herb once that was flat leaf parsly when i got it in my mouth i had to keep taking it out i found it to bitter even though it was chopped up . the cost of living today you can't afford to buy a lot of fresh ingredient's if you bought every fresh herb you would need a bank loan them on TV don't buy there's its only done for the show look how they throw away and just for the sake of one meal its only a starter that will cost you the earth plus its not worth running out into the cold for it you will find out know doubt you have used dried as you have said taste's just as good. when i see supermarket's that have dried one's on offer i buy them this is why i have so many i have once tasted fresh in in restararunt's im sure that was dried they only use it to put a few sprig's on the top to make it look more tempting. but i can only tell you my opinion if you watch some TV program's like come dine with me they use a lot of dried herbs. You use what you have and save your money it might only be a one of meal but think of the money you will save. also if you didn't like it money wasted don't get me wrong im not penny pinching but what you would spend on just that one herb could buy you plenty of other food i do realise its just this once then as i say you may not like it then what! you have spent could be a flop i watch a lot of the american food show's and one in paticular they never use's anything else but dried herbs diner's driv'in's and dive's. that's my opinion you do what ever suit's your pocket but i would look at my money twice first you will get a lot of other opinion's know doubt that disagree's but its every one to there own taste.i use load's of dried and still get a lovely taste from them how many time's do you see fresh in asda tesco's selling fresh they are two expensive for them to buy thats why they sell more dried than fresh.i bought some fresh age's ago chopped it up and put it ino the freezer but still use my dried one's. you have i nice night. witch ever you choose and let me know how it tasted. hope this has helped you.
