Were you raised with too much spanking, swatting, beating, threatening, fear or too little? Is todays 'too little' parenting worse, better or about the same as previous 'too much' parenting? is there something in between 'too much' & 'too little'? Are you using the 'too much' or the 'too little' method or something in between?

"Can you name one person who can thank their parent for hitting and humiliating them?"
.....there are a lot of 'abused' folks who love and cherrish their parents because the abused child was willing to 'take it' rather than be ignored or neglected and so saw the violence as LOVE even if it wasn't.

it's interesting that so far no one has mentioned anything about parenting somewhere between 'too much' and 'too little'.....hmmmmmmmmm, wonder if anyone even knows what that is?

I parent too little. I let my little one do what she wants. If she wants an ice-pop in the morning I say go ahead- then she will eat a good breakfast after. When we are at a store she gets something, not all the time, but most. Life is too short. Just have an open relationship with kids, they will trust you and love you and not keep things from you.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by parenting 'too little' if you don't spank, swat, beat, threat or make your child fear you. That's not parenting too little, it's parenting without pain and fear, which is the way it should be. Too little parenting would be defined, according to me, by not guiding your child, not being there for your child, not comforting and not teaching your child. Just because one doesn't hit their child, doesn't mean that discipline isn't enforced in one way or another. There are plenty of ways to teach your child right from wrong without resorting to violence. Too much parenting? Well, by your definition, that would be hitting your child too much, I think. Children do not need to be hit ever ...not even the worst kid. Parents hit out of frustration, typically, because they're too mentally weak to work with the child to alter the undesired behavior. It's a weak parent's method of discipline.

A lot of us came from a generation where our parents spanked us or worse, used a belt. Can you name one person who can thank their parent for hitting and humiliating them? I can assure you that any grown person who's parent worked with them would be the one to appreciate and honor their parents.

I pick and choose my battles, but i dont let my son get away with everything, and if he really misbehaves, he may get a spanking, and sent to his room. I think that there are so many kids now days that have no disapline! when i was a kid there was so many things that i see kids today doing that i would never attempt to do. I was never beaten or nothing, but i often got grounded to my room, with an occasional spanking.

i was the one who took care of all my brothers and sister at 10. this might explain why i don't have kids. my mom used to beat the **** out of me if one of them stepped out of line. did that make her a great parent? no, it made her old and alone.
