i would build a fireplace out of black galaxy granite slab so it's all one piece & chisel the inside edges of the opening so that it it looks kind of like the fire is floating in galaxy of gold/silver stars.
- another material to use would be a slab of red onyx which is beautiful on it's own, but when it's lit the light from the fire would actually show thru the stone.

A fireplace to create the most romantic effect, cherry wood with carved Greek gods, rose granite surround, brass doors, and a mink skin rug.
Be sure to bring your favorite finger foods and drink, strawberries and whipped cream can add to the complete picture.

I would have black slab granite on top around wherets venting would be ...more blacg granite around the bottom,I would put no glass around the flame area,I would not put it against a wall .Rather i would put it perpindicular to the wall, so it would be open on three sides, finally i would not use a log set and the fake embers, instead i would use the glowing color changing glass crystals...lastly it would be a gas fireplace...not wood burning

you can have a mantle built to suit your decor and have an electric insert added, no fuss, no mess, no cleaning. They give a small source of heat, and you have no wood to buy....
