If you're talking to someone and you know they're right about to bring up something you don't want to talk about, what's the best way to quickly change the subject, and not have it come back to whatever you were trying to dodge talking about?

I've had this several times in multiple circumstances, not one thing in particular.

say "hey, guess what" or point to anything interesting

I usually say (this is a joke in my extended family), "Look at the ceiling..." And everyone does.

99% of the time changes the subject changes. Only a real thick-head misses what's happening and has to ask, "Why?". Someone else generally clues them in and peer pressure wins. ; )

"Next subject!" has worked as well, but the ceiling ruse seems to strike a funny bone in most people. It is too ridiculous by half.

You could try subterfuge and diversionary tactics as listed above

or you could take the bull by the horns and say something like - I really don't feel comfortable in talking about this topic

and then change the subject firmly

I always sit up and say, "oh , before I forget...or that reminds me..." and completely change the subject. If they try to go back to the old conversation I look around confused or run to the bathroom.

try butting in and asking a question about a totally different subject and keep the discussion going or just be honest and say i don't want to talk about it and refuse to participate in the discussion.

Preempt them. Just dive right in. It appears I am constantly surrounded by disingenuous people I don't know nor sought out and they excel in this. Just don't become a bare faced liar like they are.
