Calling real pilots.
I'm flying my computer again and need help from someone who knows more than me. My kid's at school so I'll try this.
In my Sim-Flt I'm going from LasVegas to SFO.
My problem is I can't keep the twin engine Baron 58 at 18000 feet.
I have the AP set but the plane wont stay at the altitude. My wheels and flaps are up.
I set my normal cruise at 120 MPH but as I get higher it can't get above 80
I fiddle with the fuel rich/lean lever to get the most rpm I can (about 2600) The pitch thing for the propellers don't seem to do anything.
I can't get it to stay at 18K, 16K is no problem.
Do I need more RAM?
Thanks.

The Baron doesn't usually fly at that high altitude. I suggest flying no higher than 11,900 feet.

DJVC: full rich at altitude? You obviously do NOT know how a recip airplane engine works. My POH for a PA 28 says to start leaning at 3,000' density altitude .
POSER!!!
Jerry has it basically right, the service ceiling is actually around 20,000' I dont subscribe to the "square over"
method it is not always the best route to go, Sometimes 21'Hg with 2,000 rpm's gives better CHT's for example.

Cruise should be around 200MPH, hell, I can do120 with my Cherokee with only a 180 HP

On the sim, go to Learning center,Aircraft Information, Click on Baron 58.for "how to"(I am assuming you have msfs 2004)

I think you should read the performance charts on your Baron 58. If I remember correctly, 120 mph is nowhere near the indicated cruise speed. Check the Max altitude chart also. Can't remember if he 58 is turbo-super charged but 18k is getting out of the range of normally asperated engines.

You are flying at very near the Baron's operational ceiling. The prop pitch control should be working and that is what you should be setting, along with the throttle, for proper engine RPM and cruise speed (long range cruise is 2100 RPM at 21"Hg manifold pressure and normal cruise is 2300 RPM at 23"Hg manifold pressure). The mixture should be set for optimal CHT. If you're redlining the engine maybe the flight sim is causing you engine problems. Try full throttle and change the prop pitch control to set your RPM at 2300, adjust your mixture to set the CHT in the green.

Check you have ALT selected on the Autopilot mode, if you don't it assumes a basic pitch and roll mode that is very basic.

I do hope the next flight sim comes up with a better autopilot and autothrottle, you would never find ones that bad in any aeroplane, the gains are really poor, it overshoots every capture, and the approaches are so sloppy, plus a FLCH (Flight Level Change, constant speed climb) mode would be useful .

higher altitude is thinner air. you should be at full rich for that altitude. regular stats say that the 58 can do it. i wouldn't think that it had anything to do with the RAM, but maybe an inaccurate physics model.

try flying it elsewhere so see if you can duplicate the problem...
