i know er = error and i did turn it off, but every time i start a cycle er keeps displaying then there is nothing in the dishwasher

This ERROR indication means there is an electrical or mechanical malfunction, and it probably won't allow you to continue until it is cleared. If it's a simple glitch you may be able to clear it by cutting power to the machine and then restoring.
If this doesn't restore it to normal op, refer again to manual for error/status display meanings, or the 800 number to call for CUST SERV.
Confirm that water supply to machine has not been turned off. Check that there is no water in machine that indicates a clogged or damaged discharge pump. These conditions might cause ERROR.

Er stands for Error. You probably have something stuck in there somewhere. Take all the dishes out, take the racks out and have a good look.

Unplug it for a few seconds, then plug it back in.
