Rituals are traditionally the same act performed over and over at certain times for the same reasons. Lighting certain candles at a certain hour everyday. Prayering at 3pm because that is a special hour for many christians.
They are used to express religious events, some people perform a certain act before they do stuff for good luck every time. Baseball players will touch or kiss their gloves and bats before a game. For some it brings comfort, every Christmas you go to mass, or when someone dies you have a mass said for their soul.
