The mid west usually calls it pop, which seems strange to me but it never fails after I visit family in Iowa it takes me about a week to start calling it soda again. ( I live in CA). I dont drink a lot of soda. Coke is too sweet and Pepsi is too carbonated. I like ice tea but since I'm originally from VA its weird to me that in CA when you ask for iced tea its unsweetned... cant get any sweet tea anywhere here!!!

When I lived back in Ind., we called it soda or soda pop. I never heard anyone under the age of sixty call it so-deee. Here in Cali, we call it whatever we want, but most people are brand-specific. Instead of asking for a soda, they'll ask for a Pepsi, or a Mtn. Dew, etc. It's interesting to note the differences in linguistics, though. It's easy to forget that we might be talking to someone down the street, with our same set of verbal references, or to someone in Kuala Rampur, who sees a whole different set of meanings. Thanks for the reminder that we do live in an interesting, diverse world.

Pop is more from the old days or down south. Soda Pop too. Soda is the type of drink... basically it is whatever you want to call it. Everyone calls it something different.

I'm from western PA and we call it pop. If you are talking specifically about a cola drink, then it is "a coke"...by the way, that is just a good, fun question!
