I like to supplement a little bit of cooked meat into my dogs diet, because he's on a holistic food that requires so little to be fed that he ends meals a little hungry. I don't want to spend so much on chicken breast, and a cheap alternative is gizzards. Can you feed a dog chicken gizzards, or do they contain bone shards that might be harmful?

Sorry, I forgot to say, I know that the gizzard is an organ, but it can contain pebbles and grit and stuff. I didn't know if it could also contain bones, or if all of that is removed prior to it being marketed. Thanks!

Since hen's teeth are, well, as rare as hen's teeth, chickens can't chew their food.
The chewing is done in the gizzard, a strongly muscled organ tht is part of the digestive system. Chickens swallow small pebbles, which collect in the gizzard. When food arrives in the gizzard, the muscles go to work, using the stones to grind the food and pass it along to the next stage of digestion.
Therefore, it's likely that you'll find small pebbles in chicken gizzards. But that doesn't stop them from being a delicacy in many parts of the world, including the U.S.
If you cut up the gizzard before feeding it to your dog, you can remove the pebbles easily enough -- but if you don't, they'll probably just pass through your dog's system. (I've feed cooked gizzards to cats with no problems.)
If you need more information, it's best to check with your vet the next time you take the dog for a shot or a checkup.

I feed gizzard and necks as a treat. I would still buy the better chicken for the meals, but you could feed gizzards as a treat. They do not contain the same amount of nutrition as the breast, which has more meat and is more digestable.
It is funny that a lot of people that feed a raw diet because of the "gross stuff" in kibble, end up feeding a lot of that stuff raw!!!!
In the wild, dogs and cats would hardly waste anything!!!!!

well no bones are in it. but like every one else is saying their can be small pebbles in it. this should go straight through your dogs instants just fine. it wont even make a dent. and gizzards and livers are very good for them believe it or not it will acutely help add more oils to their coats so it doesn't shed as much and makes it shinier.

not bones but maybe cartilage? You should check out a good site as he shouldn't be hungry. try Dr Pitcairn. Our pup is on RAW as she is an epileptic.
