Actually any household oil such as 3in1 will work as long as it is applied regularly. But why? Gun oil isn't that expensive.

A gun is basicaly a machine or tool. W-D 40 ,3 in 1. LS 1, most any light oil.
I've seen motor oir used but it tends to be thick.
Grease works well for long term storage.

I wouldn't use any other oil, the ones at the gun store are formulated for firearms.

WD-40 I have 80 some firearms and no rust. That should say it all. I have cleaned a rifle bore with name brand cleaning products until the patch came out clean. Then I ran a patch with WD-40 on it and the patch was black again. That tells me that it was cleaning what the other product left behind.
