How do you change program icons?

The default program for my .AVI files is DivX, but all the files have the ugly "unknown program" icon. How do you change it?

But you guys are referring to SHORTCUTS to files, not the files themselves. I think that's what the question was about.

The icon you see on each type of file is determined by the default application that's set to open it when you open the file. For example, if Notepad is your default text editor, text files (.txt) use the Notepad icon. It's to show you which program will run when you double-click the file. This information is stored in the Windows registry for each executable (openable) filetype on your system.

You can get into the registry and change these settings---but if you don't know what you're doing, you can seriously screw up your system.

Instead, there's a great free little program called Icon Phile that lets you change the icons associated with any filetypes. That's all it does---change the icons, not the programs associated with them---so it lets you use any icons you wish for any filetype. You can get it here:

Right click > properties > change icon

OR

You can change the program that run the files by clicking the right mouse button > properties > Open with - change (button)

right click on icon go to properties and there should be a custom icon thing to change it, sometimes you can't change it if its a program, if not make a shortcut for the program you can change its icon

Just right mouse button click the icon and go to "properties". You should see "change icon" there.
