Do you believe that lack of spanking in this generation, has led to the deterioration of our society?

Spanking never hurt anything but our feelings. Ok. So it stings the butt a little too.

A lack of discipline and parenting has led to a complete disintegration of society these days. No one is guilty of anything--it's always someone else's fault. There's a medication for everything or the prevention of everything. People don't take any responsibility for themselves and their actions.

I feel you are partially correct, I was spanked as a child, and I was also beat as a child. There are big differences between the two, unfortunately, our society seems to think they both mean ABUSE.
Parents are to busy with there personal problems to worry about what little "Billy or Amy" are doing, when left to their own devices, then faced with the confrontation the usual answer is......"not my Baby, he would never do that".....lol. If only half these parents would open their eyes and really see what their precious children are really up to, they might be able to save them before it's to late.
I used to baby sit, but, when I told them I believed in spanking the child if the punishment was required, the would tell me I was not the type of person they were looking for, they wanted someone with a soft hand and gentle voice, to quote "spare the rod, spoil the child".
Now these kids (most) are little heathens I am reading about in the "to protect and serve " police blotter in the local paper .
So YES I do feel parents need to turn back to the old ways of 'punishing a child as such is required per incident", not all require spanking, sometimes it's just a firm 'no" and not "giving in" is all that is required.
Very good question, look forward to viewing the answers.

The lack of discipline yes, not the lack of spanking. Spanking is just a form of punishment designed to instill discipline, but there are many theories on how to teach discipline to children.

Personally the only time my wife and I use spanking (or hand slapping) for our 4 year old is if it is an immeadiate safety issue. This was more common when he was about 18-24 months, and now he is responding to verbal directions.

I do not believe in"spanking" my children. I may give the occasional "swat", but do not spank. I was spanked as a child and only despised my parents for it. I do feel there are other forms of discipline. Such as time-out or other stuff. Some parents do not discipline their children at all, which is leading to the deterioration of our society. Not lack of spanking.

Too many kids with lack of proper supervision has led to this also. I was spanked as a child and I am a very productive member of society.

How kids make it in society depends on how they were raised. I do believe in spanking and making a child responsible for his/her own actions. I have seen kids who were not spanked, turn out to be respectful, loving adults. This debate will be around until the end of time. and I think the jury is still out on this one. It depends on how you raise your kids is the bottom line. The thing you have to remember too, is that when people get in trouble with the law or in general, they always want to blame how they were raised, or whether or not they were punished.

Did someone say we cant spank our kids anymore? I didn't hear about that. No butt seriously...I believe our generations are slipping fast and its because of convenient divorces. When I grew up, parents did not split up. Nowadays 1/2 the people I work with are divorced and I think this screws up the kids. So a lesson to be learned is don't get married or have kids unless your in it for the long run!

I live in South Africa where parents still do it but I looked after kids in America and realized that the children where much more mature for their age and understood when I explained things than spank them. I thought it would be a night mare but I relaized I will never spank my own children. Its bullying your children into submission. You can inforce a similar rejection by being verbally abusive. So as effective as spanking can be so can words and both are dangerous. Never bully a child they know better. And always be honest and talk to your children, explain things they are learning. How else will they know unless u show them a better way.

Not so much the lack of spanking, but the lack of good parenting.

It seems that so called parents are so absorbed in their own lives that they are selfish. Other parents want to be the "Cool" parent, thus showing no leadership to their child.

Children need to be taught respect for adults, law, property and rights of others.

We can not place the blame on society, education system or lack of after school programs. The parent is suppose to be there for their child. The government is not suppose to raise our children.

In many cases, from my observation that parent needs a good butt whipping more then the child.

I'm from the south and I believe in what the bible says by not sparing the rod of discipline. I don't believe in "beating" your kids, but I do agree that a lot of people are raising bratty kids by not spanking them. I also think that some kids react differently to certain punishment. One may do just fine with a "time out", most need something a little more harsh.
