I have a friend I think is becoming bulimic. She never eats alot of food at any one time, and I'm not sure if she is purging either. She is very stressed out and her parents don't think she is worth alot. At golf shes doesnt eat anything and if she does she throws it up, but not intentionally. I don't know if she is bulimic or not, but I would really like to find out if she is or not. I cannot talk to her and the only person she MIGHT talk to is her coach for golf. Please help!!!!!!

You might suspect someone is struggling with bulimia if
* weight and body image are a constant concern,
* weight is related to how they feel about themselves,
* worn away tooth enamel from vomiting stomach acid,
* complaining of stomach problems (from bingeing and vomiting),
* large quantities of food are missing from the house,
* hiding food wrappers and containers,
* hurrying to the bathroom right after eating.
* hearing running water in the bathroom for a fair amount of time when nobody is showering (it drowns out the sounds of vomiting)

She's lucky to have a caring, concerned friend. Here are some helpful ED links.

Well there is bulimia and there is anorexia. You already know bulimics purge. Anorexia is not having an appetite or being unable to eat. Anorexics just don't really eat.

I have been anorexic. It was brought on by stress and depression. At times I felt like I would choke to death on my food. Just could not get it down. Once you become anorexic the lack of food make you worse mentally and reduces your tolerance to stress so the disease sort of feeds on itself.

If your friend very thin? That is a huge tip off to either of these eating disorders. A very thin person has gone over board for sure.

I agree with the person above who suggested you talk to the golf instructor. Talk to the instructor privately. Express your concerns and let the instructor know that you think your Friend would speak talk to the instructor.

If all else fails just sit your friend down and tell her how you feel and what you fear.

I had a roomate in college that was bulimic. She would go to the bathroom after she eats and throw up. I would notice very bad smells coming from the bathroom and stuff like that. I asked her if she needed any help if she was stressed out but she wouldn't allow me to help her. I finally had to tell the RA because she was getting really sick and wasn't going to classes, she finally got kicked out of school. Its a very bad thing to happen to people and you should definately tell somebody, like a coach or her parents, she needs help if she is definately bulimic. good luck

Some other signs are bad breath and her teeth turning colors. As said earlier, you should talk to your coach if you believe she has a problem. This way an adult can help her since this is a big issue. And last, be a good friend to her as she sounds like she is having some issues at her home as well.
