Flags are made out of a variety of material. Basic flags are a thin nylon.

My college marching band director always like to tell the story of when he was in college marching sousaphone. In the middle of the half time show it started snowing. The snow got so bad that he had problems seeing. The next thing he knows he runs into the goal post. Oops, a little off course especially considering the sousaphones during that time period usually stayed on the 50 yard line with the percussion section. They referred to it as the "ottis elevator" because all they did was go up and down the 50.

Our flags are made of some kind of shiny stuff. Cheap stuff I suppose. I'm in marching band now. Tenor sax, woo hoo. We just got a new teacher woman and she changed up our whole style. We did more dancing than we did marching and playing. But we've got a pretty cool drum line this year.

Colorguard flags are usually made from silk...like the above guy answered...yet when they get wet they tend to get quite heavy. But anyway...here's another answer to your question.

I'm an instructor and I prefer china silk, its light, airy and easy to move. Any light fabric will work, such as lames, silk essence, etc...it just has to be light so its easy to spin.

There are many different types of fabric used, depending on the look you are trying to get.
