What is the correct way of saying this?

I've seen lots of people say "I did it on accident" and a lot of people saying "I did it by accident".

What's the correct way?

The preposition "by" is generally used to indicated the way something is achieved, so in this situation I would use "by." However, "on purpose" is commonly accepted, and so "on accident" makes sense as the opposite. It could be a matter of personal preference. Nonetheless, I would say "by accident."

Well I would say by accident. But I wonder if you could use it differently in different situations. LIke if you were explaining to someone who didn't know what happen "my mom got mad at me, and I did it by accident" what if you explaing it to the person who caught you "but I did it on accident'. probally not but oh well
