Cats normally do not pant as dogs do unless extremely overheated or stressed. Much of the time what cat owners may perceive as panting is really another type of behavior called the flehman reaction. When a cat smells something it is interested in or something extremely pungent, it may curl back its lips and open its mouth to further investigate the scent. What your cat is doing is tasting the smell it has detected. This is completely natural behavior and no cause for alarm. However it is not good for them to be panting heavily. This means they are overheated and should be calm down and be in a cool place. Try not to overexert your kittie

I don't want to alarm u. Several years ago my cat started panting i just thought he was copying the dog as he stayed with her all the time. He developed a cough a few weeks after and after a trip to the vets it was discovered that he had a tumor on his lung. The vet said that cats do sometimes pant but keep an eye on them for anything unusual IE fatigue, eating habits change, coughing, or their toileting.

My cat would only pant when something was wrong. The first time he was panting he had a cactus plant in his "armpit". Another time he was panting it was because he was dehydrated. We lived in the desert and he would get overheated. I would make sure he is hydrated....also if it continues take him to the vet. When my male cat was 12 he was diagnosed with kidney failure and it made him extremely dehydrated and he needed fluid treatments. I HIGHLY doubt anything is seriously wrong with him since he is only 2. Good luck!

I have been owned by cats my entire adult life, and I have only seen that happen twice. Once, the cat was extremely overheated and the other time, the cat was sick. I would have to say it's not normal as it is with a dog.

well make sure he has water out because that's usually a sign of dehydration because cats don't usually pant.

It could be a sign of pneumonia or heart problems.I would get it to a vet right away.
