I've been fight that issue for years. You stated the Katrina victims, what about before that happened. What about those who had to live on outside of the disaster zone. I'm not being mean saying they shouldn't get help. Just that there are allot more people not just the Katrina victims out there that need help. As far as homes unbuilt did you know we destroy stuff in thrift stores that don't sale, just because there time period of the store is up (like 1 to 2 months) if we stocked or recycled some thru help centers or had a place for victims of disasters to go get stuff to restart (I'm talking dishes curtains, blankets, even furniture and such, we give to much clothes) for if they had more than the cloths to restart the money given by the government could be used for utilities or getting a place to live and stretch the money longer. If they don't get enough food stamps that money can stretch for food and toiletries better. (I’m a family of 5 we get 251.00 in food stamps, that’s not enough for a month) do like feed the children organization only with household needs. This can help hurricane, tornado, and fire, flood victims. I will also say this. Some of the so-called thrift stores that claim they want items to sale for a cause. Only give 3% to that organization while pocketing the rest. I should know I worked for one and if I hadn't I would never had known. They destroy books that can help literacy. Now you see why I see where we can help others, heck that would even help lower our garbage dumps. That thrift store is a money raiser for habitat for humanities. That’s not right to only give 3% when they call claiming to raise for them and want the donations for that. Not giving most of the money to them. If there was a group of people who could use trucks to bring items to other help centers or other smaller thrift stores to help in other areas. Not everyone can get to some of the other well known thrift store because of transportation or people think they are to expensive even for a thrift store (which I have also seen) they don’t go in. I know thrift stores that help children’s medical bills and give jobs to help people that have to do community service. Many help centers get their money from the sale of their items that they use that money for food to give out or sale for drug rehab or job training (its not just the salvation army that does these things) these places need attention like the big ones. The big ones help as a whole USA bases, but the little ones help the community they live in. if more attention to the needs of the community was also given to the smaller organizations and what they need to help others. Those areas they help in their local areas may thrive better.

I’m a military brat and lived overseas. Living as a military brat i have seen how the military help people. How communities help people (especially when your support system is on small bases) we had to help each other.) My mother lived as a very poor child-adulthood till she met my dad and they still had to watch their money and taught me how to live on very little, how to stretch a dollar, how to understand that what’s popular and what’s name brand doesn't matter. It’s food in your stomach and clothes covering your back. That you can have fun without allot of money. (Military people are not rich, many are considered low income) also that there isn't anything wrong with second hand stuff. If I were a very big millionaire I would use my money for poor awareness. I want to start an organization that covered everything I learned to help people. I don’t have a college education, just see things in a common sense way. But my eyes are open.

Agreed. Buch should definitely use tax money to aid Katrina victims and help them rebuild their houses and give them jobs. Wouldn't help to make more jobs everywhere, I know many people that have been laid off for years and are working at retail stores temporarily until they can find someplace better.

Let Iraq rebuild itself. We didn't do anything to it. THEY were the ones that destroyed our buildings in NYC and DC!

Edit: To Zach, the responder above me- That's a bunch of crap. Although the government may be putting worth some efforts, those efforts are far from good enough. There are hundreds of people living in Red Cross trailers with no place else to go, and even more people living off the street. There is little, if any, production being done as far as houses and stores being rebuilt.

We are funding Katrina with billions of dollars. That includes payments to people who should know better than to build a house on sand dunes. You might assume that the lack of progress in New Orleans is from lack of money. Sorry. You have to understand that the local government is standing in the way of much of the needed progress. After a year, they still have not decided on what the plan should be. It can be hard for homeowners to make good decisions when they don't even know what will happen in regards to zoning.

While I am sure we waste money on foreign countries, much of that money actually helps us keep people from starving or dieing of disease. In the long run that is a good thing.

You might be watching too much TV.

We've been supporting the Katrina victims for a year. How many are we still supporting from the 6 hurricanes that Florida in the last 2 years? That answer would be none. We spend billions in social programs, and I'm not too keen on spending any more. The katrina victims still on the dole are typically the ones that have been sucking the programs dry for years. They need to get a job and move on.

Because our countrys main goal is to control the rest of the world, and there are so few in this country that do anything about it. Money got to the tsunami victims in Indonesia(A terror area according to Bush) quicker than it did to New Orleans. This is not a black and white thing, its a class thing, if some rich community area got wiped out you would have many politicans personally driving and flying out there at the taxpayers expense handing out our money. But because it happened to a city that is mainly poor and liberal, it was not a immediate concern for this administration. More money is being put into investments overseas than here, this government is selling out our country and it people, its crystal clear. I blame this current administration, the christian community. and all the government programs and agencies put in place to help us. They have all failed us and corruption is everywhere, if any president should be impeached, its this evil coward. Hes wasted opportunities, money, and human lives in order to promote and advance his christian agenda. We will all pay for this familys horrid legacy in power, shame on all you drones that voted this man in, twice! Idiots! And alot of these answers are filled with lies and mistakes, 100 billion to katrina, not!

Talk to Ray Nagin, mayor of New Orleans. He has screwed everything up.
Local governments, state governments, the US government, charities, volunteers of all sorts are working everywhere where there is damage. New Orleans was built over a period of 450 years. How do you expect the city to be rebuilt in one? Over half the population has not returned. People who owned homes abandoned them. People abandoned their damaged cars. Millions of tons of debris has been disposed of. Half the hospitals in New Orleans have reopened. Half the schools have reopened. Since half the population is gone for good, they may not need to fix the other hospitals and schools.
Read newspapers and watch the evening news on TV every day. You won't have to ask "why."

we spent over 100 billion dollars on katrina.

it is a problem of implementation, not resources. i can have all the money in the world, but i probably won't accomplish much giving it to a crack addict.

we are a wealthy country and we have stopped holding our politicians accountable for their own decisions. there is no reason that new orleans should not be functioning; the money is there. it is not getting to the people who need it. they should model the levees after the one that keeps money in politician's pockets.

I believe that the US should invest more in helping Americans. But foreign aid creates jobs in the US, by sending products made in the US to other countries.

Even though I don't agree with why it happens, I can tell you that we do that to build relationships with other countries in case of war. Also to build trade relationships, so we can buy our products from other countries who make things cheaper..I think its a bunch of bull, because not only that we are using our money to help other countries, American dollars is not being circulated in our systems which of course will cause deficit
