I think it has to do with the fact you take in more oxygen when you sip through a straw, and it carries the alcohol through your bloodstream faster.

I am going to throw in my opinion as a professional cocktail bartender, (yes, we do exist, and we do have extensive training for it!) Every so often for the last 5-6 years of my bartending career someone will ask me this question. I will tell you now it is hard to prove either way because studies have been done that go both ways and it seems as though no one can make up their minds on the matter. I am going to give you my personal decision on the matter from what I have studied and from what I have seen.

I do believe it will get you drunk for a few different reasons. Firstly, and the most obvious reason is that you will be drinking much faster and there for your blood will be thinning that much quicker... Second, as you are drinking through a straw you are taking in more oxygen directly and this will once again cause thinning in the blood stream... Thirdly, depending on the drink you will be putting more oxygen directly into the alcohol and this in turn will do the same to your bloodstream as the previous two. There is also the point that you are actually putting more effort into drinking a beverage and this will also have an effect, (although it is a lot smaller than preciously stated.)

If you are ever wondering why you are waking with a nasty hangover and gut ache from drinking champagne with a straw the night before... see above answers!! (and believe me, I see this more often than not!)

Some may say false, some say true... In my profession most of the people I know think it is true and I follow them. No matter what you may believe I hope this has helped you.

DRINK RESPONSIBLY!!!

If a drink is filled with crushed ice, you will be able to drink it faster through a straw. This would have a greater effect on how fast you get drunk than any other cause.

In general if something makes you get drunk faster, it is because it causes the alcohol to move from your stomach to your small intestine faster. The alcohol moves into your bloodstream from your small intestine. CO2 bubbles in champagne will do this for some people. Drinking on an empty stomach will do this.

I have heard that more gas dissolves in the drink if it goes through a straw. This should cause it to move to your small intestine faster, but I don't know if this is scientific fact or not.

Some of the other responses are incorrect. Alcohol is 79% as dense as water, so it will not sink to the bottom. It is completely miscible with water so it will not separate out. If a liqueur contains a lot of sugar, it could be denser than water. If a bartender poured it in the glass first, it would sit on the bottom for a while.

Alcohol does not thin your blood. It is a psychoactive drug that directly affects the neurons in your brain. Alcohol is a diuretic that decreases the amount of water in your body. It seems to me that it would make your blood thicker, not thinner.

Usually girls who only want to get drunk really don't like the taste of alcohol at all, they only want to taste something like Kool-Aid. I think that when she can actually taste it, she's drinking slower due to being grossed out, therefore getting drunk slower. My theory is that she's sticking that straw way back in her mouth in an attempt to bypass her taste buds and just let the alcohol go right down her throat, therefore drinking more at a faster rate, and getting drunk faster. Drinking through a straw is not going to do anything else... you can't drink faster through a straw, if anything that's going to limit the flow of the fluid, you'd drink faster if you just drank it straight. She's simply not tasting the alcohol.

It could also be purely psychological, she may have heard a stupid urban legend and now believes it.

Or she could just be a dumb Barbie type of girl who wants to act like she's a better drinker than what she is when in reality she can't stand the taste.

I have heard the same thing before, but actually when you drink through a straw you are actually sucking all the alcohol in the drink out first, since all the alcohol in a drink goes to the bottom.

It doesn't make it stronger, but when you drink through a straw you are not swallowing as much air, so I guess you could say it helps you to drink faster.

No it doesn't make it stronger. But you drink a lot more, much more quickly than otherwise. So, yeah, you'll get drunk faster.

No, it's the alcohol thinning the blood that causes drunkenness, not the method of consumption.
