How do you communicate with it?

Do you talk to it as if it were a normal person or do you talk to it in Crazy Baby Speech?

I talk to my cat, usually as if he were a person, though when he's playful or when I'm buggin him before I pick him up, I slip into crazy baby talk.

Even though I know he's a very clever cat and I love him dearly, I do say that he's stupid (coz he is very very clumsy).
Like,... "are you crazy or stupid, you don't bite the mommy!!"
Stuff like that, I know he doesn't know what stupid is - he just knows that I love him and what ever gibberish I say is just gibberish and also he knows his name is about it.

I do not have A cat, I have 6 cats. I talk to them as I would to a person. They're all pretty smart. I have one who sits in here with me in the morning. As soon as I hit the log off button, she jumps up and meows at me because she hears the boot down music and knows it's breakfast time. Pavlovian, yes. Dogs do not have the market cornered on that one.

They definitely recognize words, but of course cannot discern what they mean as humans do. If they did, my one cat would never speak to me as I call her the "tuna boat" because she's such a load.

Most pets come to have an equivalant intelligence of a 3 year old. They say you shouldn't use baby talk on babies, so I have just assumed the same when dealing with my pup.

I actually talk to it like a child and use hand gestures to give it commands. She understands her name, commands such as "get down", "sit" and words that I say (i.e. "ooh yah" when I pick her up). I can also make a down gesture for her to get off the table. If dogs can learn, so can cats...they just think its optional or suggestive.

I have 2 Burmese cats.

I talk to them in a normal voice, or sometimes I miaow back at them.

If they are naughty I use a really low tone voice with them and quite loudly say "Bad girl", they understand that!

I have a black cat ,I talk to him all the time, I'm sure they realize that we care for them. My cat is a "camping" kitty, he travels in our motorhome & loves it. Hes been to more state in our great USA, then most humans have, I dont care if someone thinks I'm nuts for talking to my cat, I never get any back talk, & hes a darn good listener.

I think cats (and dogs too) respond to the TONE of your voice. They know when you are p***d with them and when you think they are cute, and when you love them.

I have never used "baby" talk with them. My cats are now all in the early "teens" so they are like people in their sixties or seventies and I try not to think of them as my "babies". They are grown ups and I respect their dignity.

I talk with mine as if I were talking to another human and I feel to an extent, she understands me. For example, one day when I was trying to go to work, she wouldn't let me loose, she had her claws in me trying to keep me here. I picked her up and looked her in the eyes and said, "Baby, if you don't let me go to work, I can't make money and if I can't make money, I can't buy you food, water, treats, toys or catnip, now you gotta let me go" sure enough, she got down and let me go! I really think they understand us to an extent.
