I noticed about two days ago that my female cat has been constantly shaking her head. I finallly tried to figure out why she was doing it and when I touched her right ear she shook her head again. I don't know what's causing her to do this. she's never done this before. coincidently, 2 days ago is when she suddenly started laying at the foot of my bed right under the ceiling fan. she seems very sensative when I touch her right ear. I'm starting to become very worried and really want to know what this is. I've been thinking about taking her to the vet. do you think that it's a bug or something stuck in that ear? she's strictly an inside cat and never goes outdoors for any reason. I want to know why she keeps doing this. I can tell that it really bother her. besides this problem she is a very happy, healthy, and loving cat. any suggestions from anybody will be greatly appreciated. no jokes or sarcasm or BS statements because I WILL report you!!!! Thanks!

This is a puzzle for sure. The suggestion about a child maybe sticking something in her ear IS a possibility. If you clean out your child's ears they might think they would like to try it on the cat. Children do develop strange ideas.
There could be a possible viral infection down in the ear canal. Anyway, a vet will have the otoscope necessary to look deeply into the ear and will have some idea of what it might be.

Probably ear mites, if you can take a little bit of olive oil and put it on a Q-Tip and swab her ear. Ear mites look a lot like dirt and when one of my cats first got them thats all I thought it was. But its a LOT of dirt they are really dark. If it isn't swollen or red then don't worry TOO much. Do the swab and then if you find them, not only will the olive oil help to suffocate them, (you can put a VERY small eye dropper amount in her ear and massage it, she will shake her head and the ear mites will come out but they are grosse!) then take her to the vet and get the real deal treatment!

Since everyone suggested earmites, here is a couple more.
1. foxtail (oh, she never gets out?)
2. ear infection.
3. water in the ear
your cat is bothered by something in her ear. if you have a magnifying glass, you might be able to see in there. Also, you could try dabbing a dry cotton ball in there and see what comes up.
oh, do you have any very young children that might have stuck something in there??
Good luck.

I have a cat that developed the same symptoms. It ended up being an middle ear infection. The vet gave me some pills for her and now she's fine.

Look inside her ear, if it looks dirty, its probably ear mites. They are tiny bugs that can infest the ears. You can get medicine at the pet store, or even Wal Mart, or the grocery store. Read the label and follow the directions.

You really should take her to the vet. It could be anything but it sounds like mites.
