The 20D is a bit better of a camera- no question. But, was there something specific that you wanted that your D50 couldn't do? such as firing off 5 frames per second, versus 3 on the D50?

But yes- trade up if it's an even trade.

The standard kit lens that comes with the Canons isn't all that hot. It's worth it, if you've got a few extra hundred dollars lying around to get a better lens than the 18-55mm kit lens.

The Canon 20D is a better camera in every respect. And it should be - even now, months after the introduction of the 30D, the 20D retails for $990, vs. $550 for a D50. I'd be amazed if you could trade your D50 for one without paying extra. In fact, it would sound very fishy.
Just take into consideration that you'll also need a new collection of lenses, and you shouldn't be cheap - that would negate the point of upgrading the body.

The 20D is a much better camera probably in every regard except size and weight. I would do this trade as long as you do not have a large Nikon lens collection.

It's worth to switch to Canon, but the Canon warranty can't be transferred.
