Oh yes, I've seen it happen. It's sometimes called a 'pregnant pause' or a 'knowing look', but my father could silence the whole family with a dark, silent look, and I've seen other people do it.

In terms of politics and society, a dignified silence can be more eloquent than any words.

Depends on the situation. But Yes I do believe that silence can speak louder then a thousand words of anger. Sometimes it speaks worse then anger.

The saying' silence is golden' springs to mind. When I have been angry with someone, I have walked away from the situation, not entered into conflict and left things alone, works for me. Its not backing down, I may well have said my piece calmly and thats all, then said nothing more, maintaining a silence afterwards can unnerve many

Oh yes absolutely!

the beauty of silence is that it cannot be silenced. We are by nature communicators, so to be confronted by someone who will not answer back or gratify our anger is so painful it almost rips us in two.
Also when the recipient of your anger is confronted by silence rather than caustic words of abuse, their parameters for the offence are depleted and they have to either turn away from confrontation or decode for themselves what it is they did to anger you and how to rectify the situation.
Give me the right to be silent any time-it works!!!

Oh my goodness YES! Silence is so much worse than screaming and yelling...when you are yelling you know whats going on in the persons mind but if they give you the silent treatment...you dont have a clue what you did wrong or whats going on in their head. I hate it when my step ma does that......when she is silent that means she is REALLY pissed off about something.
