Actually, there have been several people who claim to be a prophet in recent times. There are probably several who walk around the streets of New York. They just don't get much air-time, so nobody knows about them.
Of the big three religions (Jews, Christians, Muslims), you get three different answers on what role Jesus played: fraud, messiah, or prophet.
But as far as recent history goes, there have been many cults that sprung up around people claiming to speak for one God or another. The most successful claimant of prophethood relatively recently was Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon faith. He claimed to be a prophet, bold as brass. And he is just as confidently dismissed as a fraud, by non-Mormons.
All this goes to show that, as far as what it takes to make a prophet ... all it takes is a claim, and enough people who are willing to believe you.

The basic makings of a prophet is if people buy what he/she is selling, i.e. how many followers they have, and how long their legacy will last.
There have been modern day prophets. The most notable one that I can think of was Davis Koresh. He was doing pretty well for himself, with a slew of followers, when the ATF and FBI kicked in his doors and started shooting up the place. Incidents like that are probably why you don't hear about prophets nowadays.
If you define a prophet in biblical terms, I'm not sure I want to be around when the next one comes along. Jesus caused such a ruckus that his own church had him executed "for no reason". Mohammed waged war in the entire Middle East. Elisha called upon bears to tear children to pieces. Sounds like way too much excitement for me.

There are more Prophets today than the Old Testament time and most of them are working at NASA and research laboratories. You have used the word Modern History, why would God still go and search for someone to tell what will happen to the world when He had already given man the capability to predict the future of the earth?
The only thing important to God now is after all the gifts of knowing and understanding His works, do we still carry within our hearts the love and mercy to all the things He had prepared for our responsibility to take care of the planet as human beings?

Ever since the Bible has been written, we no longer need a prophet to warn us of things. We have the word of God to warn us. Anybody coming to you claiming to be a prophet, Be ware. Read Matthew 7:15-23 for more about this.

That's a fair question. We are promised prophets here in the Age of Grace in this verse....
KJV: And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
And so what are they and what do they mean?
An Apostle comes to shed new light on God's Word.
There is no doubt in my mind that Billy Graham is the greatest Evangelist of our time.
I'd guess a Prophet will show up sometime before the Return, I'd hope for some warning but y'never know.
Part of the deal is that to get to the level of mouthpiece for God, as it were, there needs to be someone who believes enough to do it. God isn't going to just zap me and make me a Prophet.
It's like Mary, she said "behold the handmaid of the Lord", someone who was finally "believing enough" if you will, to receive it. Imagine the 500 years from Malachi to the Gospels of God waiting for just one person to step up.
Peace.

Because a true prophet wont claim to be one and most of the time dosnt realize he is. Most "prophets" from history were fakes or atleast they were in the end. Too many times there fame and money went to there heads.

I am not sure we need a prophet. We need some real answers from God himself. There is a lot of stuff in religion that does not make sense. God needs to revise religions so that they do not turn modern people off. The superstitions of the traditional religions no longer cuts it for the modern person.

The last prophet on the face of the earth was the Prophet Muhammad (saas). He was the seal of the prophets and if any body after him claims to be a prophet he is a false prophet, because Muhammad (saas) is the last and seal of the prophets.

A prophet is someone called of God and given authority by God to be His mouthpiece and messenger on earth. There is a living prophet today, his name is Gordon B. Hinkley.
