Interesting matchup, and one that I think you can make a good case for either fighter. Thomas Hearns was a freakish physical specimen and had better power. Hopkins might be the better technical fighter, is a difficult stylistic matchup and might be the tougher of the two. Hopkins would be smart enough to not trade with Hearns, and would fight at a pace that could frustrate the "Motor City Cobra". Don't forget that Hopkins has never been KO'd, and that makes me think that he could outbox Hearns. I'd listen to someone make a case for Hearns, but IMO Hopkins would win a decision....

Brent F Another great boxing question sir~ I have a lot of respect for both fighters and Hopkins is one of only a few fighters I like today. Hopkins is a very tough fighter from Philly and reminds me of the old school type of fighters like Hagler. Thomas Hearns had enormous punching power and was also a good boxer with an excellent jab. There would be some very hard punches thrown and landed in this bout but boxing skills and defense would take over once they felt the other's power in this fight. I see Hearns piling up points with his jab and using his reach to win by a very close decision.

All Dream match-ups will be 15 rds.
Hearns - W 61 (KO's 48) TF 67 - W pct 91% - KO pct 72% - wins over Cuevas, Benitez, Duran and V. Hill - KO'ed by Leonard, Hagler and Barkley (average fighter) - #18 ranked puncher - #67 ranked fighter
Titles at 147, 154,160, 168 and 175.
Would have been in top 10 or 20 (ranked fighter) were it not for his stamina/chin.
Much better boxer than given credit for.
Hopkins - W 47 (KO's 31) TF 53 - W pct 87% - KO pct 59% - wins over De LaHoya, Trinidad, W. Joppy and Tarver - KO'ed by none - #50 ranked fighter
Very unorthodox
Titles at 160 and 175
In 2004 voted as #1 ranked current pound 4 pound fighters.
One on the hardest fights to predict. Hearns only lost one fight one decision. This fights in a majority draw. The fans were not clamoring for a re-match because this was a boring bout.

I think Hopkins would win fairly easily. Although Hearns was an outstanding puncher (one of the most amazing KOs I have seen was when he floored Roberto Duran for the count), I just do not think he would have had enough to handle Hopkins. I think Hearns could only fight one way, straight ahead as a stalker (which reminds me of another tall, lean, strong puncher who was supposed to destroy Hopkins.... Trinidad). I just think Bernard would use his cunning and guile to bring Hearns inside and would eventually TKO Tommy within five rounds. The fight would be similar to Hearns vs. Hagler, maybe not in action, but as far as the outcome it would be deja' vu for Hearns (although it may last longer).

hmmm, with that freakish power of hearns', i'd have to say that if hop didn't go against type and jump on tommy from the get-go, like hagler did, he'd be in for a very short night, at his expense. tommy would have superior boxing skills and could probably outbox bernard all night, if he had to but, knowing tommy, he'd go in there in full motor city cobra fashion and try to extinguish the executioner and he probably would as bernard would probably underestimate his power and get caught early

b hop hands down! the hitman was good but wreckless and bernard is such a technical fighter and a freak of nature for his ability to stay in shape that long that a fight would have gone to the judges with b hop earning the split decision

a very interesting matchup between two great warriors, hearns won many titles in a lot of weight classes, hopkins defended the middlewight titles many times. i would have to call this one a split decision draw, with no winner

Thats a good question. I would have to go with hearns. He faced a lot more competition and was in more big fights.
