I have a model 1862 Enfield Tower Musket. All metal parts (Barrel, lockplate, etc.) are a crappy brown color. I want to make it look more like metal without hurting the gun.

That crappy brown color is a patina and to remove it or to refinish the gun in any way will destroy any collector value.Rub it down now and then with some gun oil and a soft cotton cloth and leave it alone.

You'll want to consult an expert, but don't use any type of metal cleaner on it. I believe I've heard you can coat the metal with a light coat of oil. The oil will keep the metal from rusting.

DO NOT do anything to this gun until you have a good understanding of how it will affect the value. Be wise and do your homework.

To go along with Marten's answer.....I suggest you DO NOT try to fire the weapon, it will only cause damage to the weapon and YOURSELF. Weapons of that age and type are only for collectors, they should not be used for functional purposes.
