I was reading a book, and one of the characters said this, and I don't know what it means.

"The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away."

The quote isn't for "Job", it's from The Glory Field.

God is the provider of everything each of us has in our lives. Just as easily as God gave something to a person, God can take it away.

I've heard this expression used, sadly, in humor. For example, when a person finds a $20 bill on the sidewalk, but later receives a parking ticket where he has to pay $20. So it goes: God allowed him to find the $20, but God took it away soon after.

I'm most thankful for this gift God gave us that He will not take away: the salvation offered by his son, Jesus Christ.

In the book of Job, Job was tested by Satan, he lost nearly everything he had, Satan was trying to make Job hate God, but everything Satan did, Job never rejected God. He said The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.

But when Abraham came along and God developed a new covenant with Abraham and the new breed of people. The Abrahamic Seed Group. This new set of promises completely replaced the conditions found in Job. Therefore, the conditions of Job's time cannot repeat themselves for us, the members of The Abrahamic Seed Group. Satan can never do to us what he did to Job. Otherwise, the Abrahamic Covenant would be totally annulled on the spot. The conditions of Job and the promises in the Abrahamic Covenant cannot coexist. They are mutually exclusive of one another. To quote Job as the reason why things are not going your way is to admit that you have been deceived by the Devil.

It's a quote from the Bible from the book of Job. Job had everything he owned and loved taken from him, and "the Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away," was a comment he made about that showing his continuing loyalty to God despite his hardships.

okay, I read your additional comment, you need to understand that in modern novels many people quote the Bible, it happens all the time - the charachter in "Glory Feild" was quoting the book of Job. I gave you the story for a reference okay.

It is indeed a quote from Job. job was being tormented by his friends who basically were saying to him that since he had lost everything, he must have done something to deserve the suffering and that he should just confess his sin. Job spends the book defending himself, saying he has not sinned against God and praises God for the things that He has done for him in the past. The actual line was Job stating that all things he has received in his life came from God's grace and God was allowed to take it all back if he wished.

I am suprised this book is not used more often in our society because it basically has Job saying to people that he does not know the mind of God and that his friends are unfairly judging him based on outside appearances, not based upon the true relationship that Job has with God which is a righteous one.

It means that the Lord can give you something becuase thats what He does cuz he is a good God. But if you continue to disobey Him all the time and not follow in His Holy ways he could easily take that thing away. Or life if He feels like you deserve it. But to not let something like that happen you shouold repent and ask Him to forgiv eyou when u sin. Or just try ur best to live your life the way that God wants you too.

Most people seem to believe that what a person may receive in the way of blessings, good things, etc., from God, can as easily be lost as it is received.

Unfortunately, this notion is based on man's superstitious understanding that God has direct contact with mankind in general, which isn't true.

It is not based on any sound reasoning from the Bible - but moreso on a traditional saying made up by a person.

I think it means that our life is a gift from God. God gave us life and God will take is whatever, whenever he wants and we do can not do anything , its god who deiced how long we should live. no one knows when you die.
that's why it says " the Lord giveth and the Lord takenth away".
hope it helps you.

It is alame excuse to justify the religious teachign that God give us blessings (when we experience good things) and God take away (when we experience the bad stuff).
In reality, what we experience is due to Cause and Effect of what we do here and now in this lifetime and as well as from our past lives. What we did that was good we now reap the good Effect of that Cause. The opposite is equally true. When the conditions and situations are right, the fruition of our actions past will manifest the results. Take care.

"The lord giveth" It means the lord blesses you and allows yu to accumulate happines, or security, a good, life heath, friends, family ect.
The other part "the lord taketh away" is a phrase use dwhen you lose something. like a loved one, health, property, ect.
Basically i tmeans YOur lord rewards you for being a good honest god loving christian, but will remove those same reward for not obeying his commendants.

And blessed be the name of the Lord.

Everything belongs to God in Reality, we just think its ours. All that we have is by grace. It is ours to use. It can be taken away at any moment. But we take so much for granted that some never realize how temporary life and circumstances can be.
