This is how we normal people have been doing this for years and the hummingbirds show up even into October.
Use 1/4 cup (minimum) refined sugar to 1 cup water. Stir well, then add to a clean glass hummingbird bottle. Only mix up what you need, then you don't have to worry about refrigeration.
If your water is chlorinated, buy drinking water, a gallon at a time from any store. If you notice the water becomes cloudy after a few days hanging outside, discard it and wash the containers well and fill again. Food coloring is not necessary. Do not ever use any artificial sweeteners. These will harm thee hummingbird. The hummingbird has a high metabolism and will return to the feeder many times during the day. We usually put ours up April 15th and don't take them down until the end of October just in case there are any stragglers dragging down from Canada. Keep ants away by putting Vaseline on the hanging wire. Hummingbirds eat insects and flower nectar also.

Water and red food coloring. You can put a little sugar in it too -- but don't keep it long -- it could ferment!
