I adopted a 5 year old Akita a month ago. He seemed a perfect dog- trained, well behaved, until last night he discovered an opened back yard gate and took off. We searched the neighbourhood for 2 hours with no result.
Local SPCA called middle of the night, the dog was found a couple of miles from our house, in the area we have never walked him.
Was he trying to find his old home?
Was he going to came back?
Can we train him not to run away or is it how it's going to be from now on?

P.S. he seems very guilty today when we picked him up.

he may of been looking for his people..how long was he at the shelter befor you adopted him? i have a 10 month old akita, & she is very protective of me. my other dog was adopted from a shelter, she was there 4 months, when we got her home she took off 2 times but we caught her right away. now 3 years later we can open the front door & she won't run. Give it time, he needs a little extra spoiling, he may still not be sure what is going on,i would sugest untill you can train him to stay in the yard keep an eye on him! akitas are VERY faithfull to their master...give him time...please send me pic's of him i would love to see him!!!!best of luck to you both!!and if you want to ever talk about aklitas e mail me!!!

Most dogs just like to wonder. They if they know there way back they will usually come back if they are lucky enough no to get stolen or run over. If the dog was with one owner for the 5 years before you adopted him he might have been trying to go back home. I have tried and tried to train dogs not to wonder off and have never been able to do it. good luck. keep the back yard gate closed!!!

This is how I trained my dog. Its a long process, but it works

First put him in the yard and leave the gate open and put a rope across the gate opening. Stand on the other side of the rope, and tell your dog to stay. When he tries to cross it tell him no and put him back and tell him to stay. Do this everyday for a week. Next week lower the rope some and repeat the process. A couple of days later lower the rope again and repeat. Next put the rope on the ground and repeat..After a week of that do it without the rope.

Make sure you walk your dog every day. They like exploring. If you get it out of his system maybe he will be more content at his new home. I have 2 Akitas, good luck. PS Watch "The Dog Whisper" TV show on National Geographic Channel.(Great Tips)

He most likely got confused and lost.

Just make sure he always has tags on in case he gets out again.

That's really great you gave an older dog a second chance. Usually dogs that old don't find homes.

Just bond with him, and he'll never want to leave. Give him some time. I would get a collar, or microchip him incase he runs off again. Keep an eye on him when he's outside. Make shure he CANT escape!! If this continues, seek out a trainer.

you're lucky you found him...

you dont really have any history on him.. he's 5 years old and you only had him for a month... you dont know if there is something that he is looking for..

just try to show him love, theres really nothing else you can do.

He may still be confused about where he belongs. Just be patient and loving. He will eventually understand you're his family.
