Check out the end of your gearshift and/or turn signal--there should be a button on the end to push on/off for the O/D. If pushing this button doesn't work, you need to have it checked out. Having your O/D disengaged keeps your vehicle in high gear (as opposed to O/D) resulting in higher RPM's and decreased gas mileage at road speed.

I actually had this happen to me in a 1997 Mercury Mystique (also Ford made) with only about 45000 miles on it. I don't know what exactly caused it but turning the car off and then on again made the flashing go away temporarily.
Unfortunately, the flashing was just a symptom of a greater problem and the transmission ultimately needed to be replaced.
I hope something different is going on with your truck :(

It is because your computer has registered a fault in the transmission, one of the sensors has gone AWOL or there is a real problem, if this happens at start up and never goes off I would say sensor, but if it comes on after say 30 minutes driving then I agree that you have a cooling problem. Get to Autozone and have them hook up the diagnostics to it for free...Sometimes it doesn't register in the memory...

You have an electrical problem. The flashing is a warning of further problems. Need a computer diagnosis.

Transmission is too hot. I have the same thing on my E350. If you are hauling a heavy load and high speeds is will overheat the transmission.
