I just used a batch file that had a small mistake in it that I didn't notice until it started running and it unfortunately deleted all image files (jpegs, pngs, bmps etc.) from the first few directories (and all sub directories) in my C: drive.

This has caused me to lose some VERY important information from these files. I know that when you delete things, they are not overwritten instantly, they are just marked as free space - the data is still there.

So I want to know of a free application I can find on the net to restore these files (even a trial would do). I know Windows Restore won't work before anyone says that.

To Ymets2k - You'd better mean that sarcastically - I seriously think you were too f*cking stupid to read the whole question.

To mjdp - I think I know how to work the recycle bin - I said it was a batch file that deleted it: this is the same as using 'del' in MS-DOS which doesn't send things to the recycle bin.

To Jarhead - Thanks I tried the app you recommended, however all the files were corrupt.

As for whoever said not to turn the computer off, unfortunately that was the first thing I did - the computer had stopped responding as a nice little batch file deleted all of my images so I had no choice but to hit the reset button on my computer.

First of all, when a file is deleted on a computer it may or may not still be on the hard drive. When files are written to the hard drive, the data is written there as well as a record where the file is located. Think of when you go to an office in a big building. You know the person's name but you have no idea what floor or office number, so you look it up in the building directory to find out. Computer files on the hard drive and how to find them is in a directory (Master File Table, for example). Now when you delete a file, it's taken out of the MFT, but data is still there with no pointers to it. So, it's there but not there. Sophiscated programs can scan the hard drive without using the MFT and find data that hasn't been overwriten by another program. See, when the pointers were deleted, the space where your file was is available, and the next saved data will probably overwrite (reuse) that space. Also, programs that create content (Word, picture progs, etc) leave tracks all over the place on your computer, that an expert can probably find.

Whatever you do don't shut the computer off! You need to get a bootable disk that has fie recovery and disk browsing capabilities and boot from it. You will almost for sure be able to get most of it back. The less you do to your computer in the meantime the better. Do not install any app on it!!!!!

Run out and buy the software!!

you have one already built into command prompt. its a little utility called recover

type recover and specify the path you wan to recover

recover c:\.....\mydocuments\mypicutures

You should think of getting norton goback. Its great. Have used it few times when I have done something stupid. It takes your hard drive back to a point you specify in the past up to the memory it can hold.

if you google 'freeware data recovery' you will find some progs. I've used some before with varying levels of success - trials don't recover it they just say you can or cannot!

the thing about it is you will want to install the program on a different computer to keep from overwriting the "free" space where your pictures are.

this one is free - try not to do anything with your computer though - i suggest moving to a different computer immediately.
