In general( not from any particular religious view)--if there is God
--why he need to be loving, merciful and just? By defination he might be all-powerful, all-knowing and designer and creator of everything
and the first cause. But don't you think the loving, merciful or just--these characteristics are redundant and varies to degrees in different faiths? Logically, if there is God--he might be autocratic
and a bit whimsical. Think that you are a great and all-powerful scientist and you made some robots with artificial intelligence and bits of emotions . How will you behave???

I see Gods characteristics as well presented in the Old Testament. Matter of faith alone.

Because these are also in us, and we (most if not all) agree that these are good attributes in everyone of us, however undetectable it might be in many cases.

Then, by [your] definition, God, being the designer and creator, is very likely to have these attributes too. Just like a person who didn't experience being loved or love others is very unlikely to write a good novel about loving family stories.

Of course, this doesn't prove anything because it works both way. It is whether one chooses to define God as the creator, or God as a human created concept.

Also, one may argue that since we also have evil thoughts, doesn't that imply God too have evilness? That's where many religious teaching try to point out about something went wrong in a very early stage of human history. Of course, again, if you define God as a human created concept, its logical to say that such an episode is needed to separate the evilness in human from the responsibility of the good God.

Thus, to me, it is a matter of choices and likelihood. One of them is between creative human beings created the concept of God, or a creative God created human beings with creativity :)

One point to note, however, it is those who don't believe the idea of the existence of a creator God suggested that believers created the concept of God, but believers just believe the existence of God and they don't have the necessity or chance to create the concept of God to believe in.

However, I sadly agree that most religious followers buy the explanation of their religions because of some personal needs.
