My yorkie barks on command and for his toys, thats the only time he barks. Sometimes if he's in another room I will bark once, he will bark once and we go back and forth with each other, it's a game to him and me..lol Well, sometimes I will bark, then howl and he howls too but seems sort of annoyed, or like it's painful to him. Not sure if he is telling me to shut the h*ll up or if it's something he likes to do. Am i torturing him by making him howl, my husband thinks he's crying because he thinks I am and its upsetting him.

I don't think your upsetting him, when you do it have your husband watch the dogs reaction, if he makes that little growler face where they show those little teeth after he howls at you then I would say you are totally annoying him. My vet would tell you, "That's no biggy, (then look at your dog and say) Say 'mama, it gives me personality! and makes me Special and different!"
She says that all dogs have their quirks and no dog will be the same. Sounds to me like you just have an interesting little tike on your hands!

I would bark at my dog also. But never did I howl at him. Howling, I believe, is the sign of pain. SOOOOO in his own way, no doubt he is telling you to shut the H e l l up.
I don't care what people say about animals. I am a firm believer they have feelings and they can laugh and smile and also cry for things that we have done to them.
I had a pitbull boxer mix called Sampson. He died in 2004. There is no dog or animal for that matter, could ever take his place.

i have a dog too, and my advice is to just kinda not bark and howl at you poor dog, because your yorkie seems kind of primadona barking on command for his toys, so he might be getting the wrong message if you start barking at him.....
so from now on, just leave the barking to the dogs, lol, good luck

Dogs howl and others join in just trying to express themselves. They are singing the blues!

I howl with my dog now and then, and I do it low and quiet, trying to imitate T-Bones own howl... with the pitch I don't believe its painful.. but he does knock me down and lick my face til I quit!

For a dog, howling is a sign of pain or distress, while barking is more "sociable".

a dog howling is part of the pack mentality a call to gather, his being separated is probably confusing. just go to him when you howl.

I work for a no-kill animal shelter and I think they are singing when they howl. Maybe he thinks your off-key!

You should find better ways to bond with your dog. I am sure you love him. Teach him new tricks or learn to play catch or something like that.
